How do i get beat those epic level spellcraft DC's ???

Aven

First Post
I was reading the epic-level issue of dragon, and i came across a few new epic-level spells. I noticed the LOWEST dc was slightly below 70, if i recall correctly, and the highest was 200+ !! if this is the spread we can see in the EHL, how can epic level characters in the 21- 30 range expect to meet these on a regular basis ? i mean, even with a primary spellcasting stat of 30 (reasonable, given epic level characters) and max ranks we're looking at a 10+ (at 30th lvl) 33 = 43, plus a few for misc or skill focus bonuses so we say 45. now with a twenty on the dice we've got at most a 65. Average spells seem to be somewhere in the 100's!!!. Any ideas on how we can reasonably meet these DC's ?

My only assumption is that there are epic-level feats that might help to counter these. For example.

Epic Will

Prerequisites: Iron Will x2, Level 21+

Your Willpower is legendary, allowing you to shrug off all but the greatest mind-affecting magics with ease.

You gain +10 to your Will saves.

You may take this feat multiple times. Each time you take this feat, its effects stack with both Iron Will and Epic Will.

Please note that this feat is just one possible example of how to handle this. I have no clue whether or not it's actually in the book.

or build an item that grant a skill bonus, something like a +50 to spellcraft

NB: that's why I think this system is flawed

Just get a ring that adds +60 to Spellcraft (720,000gp) or even +90 to Spellcraft (1,620,000gp). :D

Sidebar: Although, it's really funny how they price these things.

Ring of Spellcraft +29; 16,820
Ring of Spellcraft +30; 18,000
Ring of Spellcraft +31; 192,200

Just a bit of a leap there towards the end. Very, very strange. This kinda goes along with my bitching about the stat increase thing too.

Is that a misprint or Wizards' fuzzy math?

Welcome to the ELH. :D

The skill bonus limit for levels 1 - 20 is +30. Anything higher is an artifact for a non-epic character. A bonus of +31 is an epic bonus, and is much more expensive.

70 is not the lowest, just the lowest the presented.

When you want to learn an epic spell, you create it from lists of various 'spell seeds' (read: components.)

They have a LOT of different components, as well as how the cost of each one should be changed as you raise or lower the components abilities and add other effects to the spell. All of this comes into the Spellcraft DC. Stronger the spell, higher the DC. Works the other way too.

Of course even the 'weak' epic spells trump 9th level spells half the time.

Later.

True. But there's one problem. Unless you're looking at a Spellcraft DC of around 80, it's far easier to just metamagic the hell out of your spells up to 14th level or higher. A 16th level delayed blast fireball ends up being far worse than even the Hell Ball that showed up in Dragon Magazine.

However, you are correct in that you can fairly easily lower the Spellcraft DC with various methods, and still get your bang for the buck.

While true that a 9th level spell with lots of metamagic might trump some low DC Epic Spells, where you get those 16th level spell slots from becomes a problem.

To have a 16th level spell slot, you would need to take at least 6 feats, not to mention the metamagic feats required to fill it.

You only need one feat to get some epic spells (that and a good load of spellcraft/knowledge:arcanca.)

Whats the point of all this?

You mean I was supposed to have a point?
