How do I pick up an item in an opponents square

Surely it would only provoke (an AoO) if you were not using a reach weapon?

If you're not threatened, you don't provoke. Depending on which interpretation of the "natural weapons provoking by entering my space" rule you go with, Darklone's answer is also good.

I'm not sure if you can pick up stuff from an adjacent square. Either by the rules, or in real life. 5 ft. away is not exactly within arm's reach.

For a rogue who manages to tumble into an opponent's space, I think I'd allow an additional free 5 ft. adjustment to take him out of the opponent's space. So move action to move into the opponents space (tumble to avoid AoO), move action to pick up (provoke AoO), get out of opponent's space "for free".

When my group had the Mad Disarmer, we gave a Wand of Unseen Servant to the Wizard just for whisking away the Big Bad's weapons.
How intriguing...

But then, my wizard is the disarmer (telekinesis ) in our group and there's no other arcanist or even user of magic devices. :\

I'd tend to agree with you - 5ft reach with a weapon to strike something in an adjacent square is different to picking up a small object from the feat of an opponent.

I think you have to Bull Rush the opponent out of the square first (or use one of the alternate methods outlined already by other posters).

I'm inclined to say you can't do it, but the rules aren't especially clear. They do mention when you *drop* an item it can go into your square or an adjacent square.

Bull rush them out of the square, then pick up the item, I guess.

If you can reach their square to punch them, why not reach it to grab something?
