How do Psions compare to arcane casters?

It's pretty clear that familiars DO NOT gain actual hit dice as their master levels. [...] In fact, familiars are the only 'companion creatures' that are specifically limited so as to NOT gain feats.

The average Familiar is way smarter than his mid-level Sorcerer companion. They don't need a whole lot of other advantages... ;)

PS: Now THAT would be an amusing evil villain NPC... an Imp with Marshal levels (and other levels... Crusader? Bard?) who becomes the Familiar of one dumb Sorcerer after another.

PC to Sorcerer: "Why do you keep that thing around?"
Imp (answering instead): "Basically for Improved Evasion." :]

...later:
PC 1: "Yay! We killed the evil Sorcerer who we've never seen before but who somehow knew all of our weaknesses... but his stupid imp got away."
PC 2: "Yeah but what can one stupid imp do?"
PC 3: "Why do so many Sorcerers have imp familiars anyway? His familiar wasn't very helpful in combat or anything."

To the topic:

I think the HD thing is an "incautious wording" thing, not intentional. Much like the incaution wording on the ardent and improved manifesting results in another unintentional effect.

*thinks that as long as Psion compares arcane casters, we all know he'll like Spellmaster every time.* Or was it Spellweaver? ;)
