How do you choose a class?

For everyone = Do games with more modern group types change the way you pick a character? Such a s Delta Green or Twilight 2000.... You are all soldiers or such, so do you still strive to make your character different, or is overlap good in those games?

What about a group of "James Bond" characters?

Or a group Sherlock Holmes game? Like, when combat is low, and dangerous, and anyone can shoot a gun to kill...

Backgrounds and Skills are the focus for me in more modern settings, especially with tight thematic groups like "all military' or "all spies", by highlighting different skills you get to differentiate your character despite overlaps. I tend go with Technician characters who are all hands on skill focused and let the other players focus on combat and investigation

I try to come up with a concept that I think will be fun to play or that will fit in with what the others are playing. If I show up and make something first, I go with something I think will be cool. If I show up last I play a cleric.
I do a combination of this and whatever I haven't played recently.

Keeping the type of game in mind and what the other players are doing, I start with the character's background, interests, etc. and then let the character tell me their class.

For classless systems, I do the same and then pick skills, talents, etc. that are appropriate.

But sometimes, I'll just feel like playing a cool elf! 😊
