How do you give out treasure in your campaign?

1. Do you give out treasure based only on "planned" encounters and not random?

2. Do you give out treasure based on all encounters, planned and random?

3. Do you have your own system?

There are two ways the players get treasure. The first is defeating things and looting it. These are done traditionally using table and rolling randomly. The other way is by gift or reward. These are usually hand picked and have some meaning.
 

When a monster is killed or defeated, it magically turns into a string of paper tokens. You collect them and turn them in at a nearby stand for prizes.

10 tickets for a chain shirt, 100 tickets for a Longsword +1 or 1,000gp, etc.

Usually I use only planned encounters, so it´s option #1 for me. I also tend to gather the treasure in large chunks at "logical" places -I mean, the PCs still get the recommended money per level, but the monsters don´t carry huge coffers full of coins with them.
 

I give each npc/monster whatever seems right at the time. Sometimes the PCs get way "too much", other times they get nothing at all. Most monsters have no treasure at all, while most NPCs have more than what's coming to them (according to the DMG). I'm not too comfortable with the huge difference in PC/NPC wealth recommended in the DMG, it just seems wierd to me. This difference just gets greater and greater at higher levels; according to the ELH level 35 PCs should have something like 20 times the resources of a level 35 NPC... :eek:

Occasionally, I make a ballpark estimate of how wealthy the PCs are, confer with the DMG tables and deside if I need to be stingy or generous with the treasure over the next few encounters.

Some random generation, some planned treasure... in general I'm somewhat stingy with treasure, and we recently had a gnarly event that took away everyone's gear. So now there are a bunch of epic/nigh-epic pcs imc running around with +1 crap. :]
 

90% coins, 8% mundane items, 2% other. Let them but their own weapons most the time but do give them a powerful item once in a while at low levels, weapon is usually +3-5 with some special abilities
