How do you handle NPCs as a Tiefling?

You are playing as a Tiefling Wizard/Warlock/Sorcerer (the point is, you look like a magic user and a demon).

Magic users are practically non-existent but aren't unheard of, the populous is just uniformed of magic.

Your Tiefling has the typical traits of a Tiefling (so male/female, red skin, pointy horns, a tail etc.)

and your Tiefling has a Neutral Good alignment and doesn't want to scare people/or have to resort to threats. (Part of the reason to play this character would be to play the ironic role of "good demon" so changing races, roles or appearance would defeat the point of trying to play this character)

How do you do this? (Remember, you look like a Wizard as well so NPCs might think that you are either trying to deceive them as a Demon or a Wizard if you start acting clever or ask a lot of questions.)

so you're a demon spawn child of hell using infernal spells in a realm where magic is misunderstood?

sorry but thats a recipe for disaster as you're going to be distrusted and openly feared and reviled. You'll be lucky if the townsfolk arent grabbing the pitchforks, holy symbols and lighting the torches right now in order to drive you and your enthralled minions out of town and back to the fires of damnation you came from :)

In such a world non-functional magical practices are likely to be extremely widespread just as they were in the pre-modern period of our own world. They would invoke whatever supernatural beings are considered most powerful, probably gods, and mostly be aimed at avoiding harm - disease, injury, bad harvests, infertility.

No flips for you!
Have you talked this over with your GM? Because the opinions of random people on the internet aren't the relevent ones. You already indicated a deviation from baseline (magic users are rare and mistrusted) so it would probably be good to talk this over with the oerson who's making these changes to see how they think it might work.

If that discussion doesn't go your way, I'd also suggest that you might want to put this character concept on the shelf and play something more aligned with the setting. There will be other games and ither settings. Don't set yourself up for frustration.

He does not need to dress like a mage to still be a mage. Instead of a pointy hat, wear a cowboy hat, or regular clothes instead of robes. I assume that Catholic priests wear regular clothes sometimes and are still priests. Or not everyone I see on the street wearing a suit is a politician.

You could also Hellboy your look down to be more non-threatening to humans.

Take the Folk Hero background and say that the PC has already started making a good name for him/herself in the region.

Sure, sometimes people may react with hostility, but you can also have people step in and tell the mob “you mean you haven’t heard of the Devil Saint of Southpoint? Saved two children from a bullette, he did.”

Ultimately, this can be as much of an issue as the player and GM agree for it to be. So talk to your GM and see if you can work out a good approach to it.

Depends how rare Tieflings are too. Don't Tiefling always make more Tiefling even if they try to crossbreed? I'm sure everybody's heard of Tieflings at some point.
