Victoria Rules
As a DM: I prefer something in the 6-8 range, but it varies even within a single campaign...there might be one tightly linked series of adventures (e.g. A-series) followed by a couple that have nothing to do with anything larger than themselves, followed by another series not related to the first one, etc.
As a player: if there's a story, fine; if not, fine; as long as there's things to beat on and-or blow up, and neat stuff to be found.
