How do you make NPCs out of PC classes?

Can you go by race (ie human?) I just did some elves--including some level 7 minion archers I cooked up. Looked up the elves, then cross referenced against same role and level, using MV and M3 monsters. Pretty easy.

This is what I do. The monster version for the player character races can cover most anything you need to make an NPC ranger, fighter, rogue, wizard, etc. If you find one race doesn't have the "class" you need, all you have to do is swap out the racial powers and traits for those of the race you want. For example, if an elven archer makes a good ranger, but you want a human instead, just swap out an elf traits for human ones. The powers and stats should still suffice.

If you throw kobolds, lizardfolk, goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears in the mix, you get even more options.
