How do you support a hobby store when you don't buy products from the hobby?

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a group raffle.

I think a store door prize might be a step too far simply because as a former business-owner myself, I know that that sort of thing can attract unwanted attention from authorities. It sounds innocent and you would think it's a non-issue, but you just need one person with a stick up their butt to report it and suddenly you're 'tax evading and conducting illegal lotteries'.

But on an individual table level, it would be us as citizens doing it, not the store. A voluntary buy-in for $5 buys you a ticket. At the end of the game, one of the tickets is drawn randomly and the winner gets the total as a gift-certificate at the store.

I'm not keen on the "MVP" idea simply because that opens you up to all sorts of people's BS like accusations of favouritism and special treatment, etc. Random I think is definitely the fairest and least objectionable way to go about it.

That's why when I mentioned MVP I specifically said "by vote". The DM isn't awarding MVP, the players are.

1. Paizo Battlemats are great.

I couldn't agree more. The flip-mats are amazing being useable with both dry & wet erase markers.
2. WoTC dungeon tiles are not so great, but still worth getting. And you could buy Monster Vault just for the monster tokens. Throw away the book if you don't like it, which would be dumb as it's a great monster book, but hey.
I've got tons of DTs and have decided that, sadly, they just are too much hassle to use beyond some 'window dressing' (chests, tables, statues, pits etc). Except for the outdoor ones - those are great for nearly any wilderness encounter you can find.

to the OP - I agree with you in some respects about the usefulness of 4E hardbacks vs. DDI/CB/MB. I don't have any answers to how you can support a store without buying something - maybe try out some new & different games? (not just RPGs I have been on a huge board game kick for about year now - so many great games out there, so little time...)

I don't know what it is exactly but I just can't get into things like this. I have tried but I get bored of them very quickly. Same goes for a lot of things like video games; I've currently tested out almost a dozen different video games over the last couple of months and even major titles that others swear by, bore me senseless.

It's gotten to the point where I hardly bother with anything new anymore simply because 99.9% of the time, I know I won't enjoy it. I enjoy 4e, so that's what I'm going to stick with and honestly (and I mean nothing personal by this and nor do I mean it as an attack) I'm kind of sick of people telling me to try something else. I get that other people have diverse tastes, but I don't, and I'm happy with that.

I drop in every few days for a hello at the aforementioned new store. I make it a point, once a week, I buy something - usually more dice to add to the twenty-giga-quadrillion I already have. Place is still busy, all the time - they've even extended their hours - I have directed the owner to this thread...
