How Far does IC effect OOC?

A dispute between friends, causes feelings hurt OOC, because of something IC.

The first party consisting of two friends, OOC who are also known for great IC rping, are angry because they have claimed there idea was copied by the second party. The second party consists of two people, who now have their feelings hurt. Noting this was an IC idea, it stepped out of bonds into OOC, causin these horrible feelings. The names won't be revealed to hurt anyone, but one of the people from the second party, are truely hurt OOC by remarks made about them, because they used a simular idea.

Please post your opinions...mine are, that I am a friend to him/her that was hurt, and now am being ignored by two people who I felt were two of my closest internet buddies. The person that was hurt was another close buddy of mine. my opinion is IC and OOC are two different things, and if some one is so much into IC game that it goes OOC then, it's not worth rping with them any longer. Please share your ideas, and your remarks, it is very important. ESPCIALLY THE WIZOS thoughts will be much appriated as will the PATRONS who rp in the emporium/tavern rooms, and the branches of those rooms.

 Whoa whoa whoa... Okay, was the idea created by the characters... or by the players?

If it was made by the players: It was impolite for the players to use a similar idea without asking, and should've done so before using it, UNLESS, of course, the idea was created COMPLETELY and TOTALLY independant of the first party.

If it was created by the characters, either independant or otherwise, the first party should've been more secretive about it.

IF it was both IC and OOC created, I.E planning to storm a dragon, then see the cure for the OOC part.

Also, nobody should've taken it SO seriously as to actually go as far as you mentioned. IF THEY HAVE then, unless one of the wizo's is a certified counselor, there is nothing we can do, and OUTSIDE HELP such as a clergy man, a counselor, or other such helper SHOULD BE SOUGHT OUT.

For that, I give you a virtual yellow ribbon card. Just say "I'd like to use my yellow ribbon".

IF ANYTHING I'VE MENTIONED HAS PROVEN TO BE OFFENSIVE, just say so and I will change it.

:whatsthis :mymy:

Well, to state the obvious, that's not a good situation in the least.

As for the topic question:
Personally, I keep in character and out of character separated as much as possible. Do my characters' friends become my friends? Oftentimes, yes, but not always. Do my characters' enemies become my enemies? Absolutely not. In character should never affect out of character that strongly unless there are severe extrenuating circumstances to cause for it. Outright lies from one character to another without informing the player of the lied to can be among these extrenuous factors, as can things like taking advantage of someone's trust; in those cases though it's more of the out of character affecting the out of character.

As for an opinion on this.... Being completely impartial:
The information is a bit too vague to form a solid one from that would be fully fitting. You mention one person being emotionally hurt OOC by remarks made, but do not specify whether these remarks were made out of character or in character. That bit of information would have a fair amount of impact there.

As for the idea issue, still being completely impartial:
If it was developed by the players independantly and executed in a way that did not disrupt the other players' plans too horribly, then it is troubling that it would be taken this far and wind up causing personal emotions to get involved. If the idea was developed by seeing this other idea and deciding to go for it too, then both parties are in the wrong at least to a degree if it was handled in a less than polite way. Regardless, I hope that the players in question are able to resolve this and rebuild burnt bridges, so to speak.

If the person you speak of is truly that depressed, then it would be wise for them to speak with a professional about it; that would do more good than a bunch of people on a message board can.

Just my two.. or four cents.

Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but to me it appears the problem here isn't so much something that was IC bleeding into OOC, but rather someone is offended because they feel their intellectual propertery/idea was stolen by someone?

Could you clarify if the idea was allegedly stolen by the players, or the characters?

If it was allegedly stolen by the players, then it's really an issue of people feeling intellectually robbed and I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole without knowing all the facts.

If it's someone copied them IC for an IC reason, then I would hope that it could be resolved as adults OOC since characters generally have motivations and reasons of their own for everything.

However, it sounds very much like a case where you'd need all the details to sort anything out and I wouldn't want to rush to any conclusions regarding either side.

I'm saying that because of what happened IC, should it go into OOC into rude remarks. The persons involved in the second party did not want to copy off of the original idea. Now tell me, if an idea is taken by a char IC, based off something in character then by another, then should it leak into OOC?

Personal opinion?
This is a game folks, remember that.

It is of course the choice of a player whether or not their character picks up on something, but if another player doesn't want the character to, they should discuss it ooc. Preferably civilly. Hopefully with both sides listening.

That being said, if the second party didn't want to copy, why does it seem that they have? :(

They didn't know it would cause this type of havoc, and it turns out it did. Now they did something different, at least they thought it was then the first party. I also have seen a lot of people in OOC hurt through IC with friendships. THIS POST IS TO REALISE THAT PEOPLE DO HAVE FEELINGS OOC, BUT, NOTHING IC SHOULD COME IN OOC. Hopfully people that read that will understand. Keep your Real Life feelings out of your In Character Feelings, so things like this won't happen again.

**opinion only**

I agree with the previous post, things IC should remain so and OOC should remain so. No lines crossed, if you are angry about something that happend IC talk it out.

Flinging insults only hurts people and doesent get rid of the problem. If you are that immature, in my opinion, you need to step back and separate your IC and OOC. If you cant, then you shouldnt be roleplaying.

I stumbled across this one on one of my infrequent visits to the boards and thought I would add my two cents in.

Neither OOC or IC ideas or plots should not be "stolen" from another "person".

Anyone that has been around for more than a few months has seen this scenario played out over and over again. Something happens IC and folks get all bent out of shape over it OOC. I know one player that if a character so much as bad mouths one of his characters that player will start an OOC flame war and try to get as many people as he can to stop rping with the player of the offending character. Alot of folks that come here take the GAME way too seriously. Now some of those players use their characters and what happens to them as a basis for writing novels so I have heard. I'm not saying it is right for them to get upset over something that happened IC but I can see where they would be frustrated in certain circumstances such as the stealing of an idea that they worked hard to come up with.

I can honestly say that in eight years of gaming on this site I have never became upset over IC actions. Now I have become so angry I could have chewed nails over the actions of some players. I have characters that literally hate other characters and would probably make deals with devils to see to their eternal suffering. Now that doesn't mean that I hate the players of said characters some used to be some of my best online friends. Those that know me know that there is only one player on this site that I hate with a passion and even with him I don't take IC actions OOC.

The people that take this site and the actions of all these characters so seriously need to have professional help. Only a person with a warped sense of reality could let something so trivial turn into a flame war or a grudge match. Work out those problems in group and let the less crazy people have their fun.
