Level 20 or higher - multiple times.

Lets see ...... Cleric - 21, Wizard - 30, Wizard - 25, Fighter - 21, Rogue - 25, Sorceror - 21, Druid - 24, Paladin - 22, Ranger - 26.

Keep in mind...this is all versions of D&D and I've been playing about 30 years now. That is for you wags that think that with the amount of characters I have over 20th level, that I don't have a life outside of playing D&D. :p

Your poll is too broad. I voted 6-10, but it was only 6 levels. PrCs for casters and a mix of multiclassing and PrCs for non-casters make going to 20 in just about anything.... silly.

Except maybe Druid and Warlock (and similiar classes)... they're both a PrC unto themselves.

I made to 14th level with a cleric once. It's easier to refrain from multiclassing with a spellcaster.

Only if you dislike taking PrCs as a general principle! :p

What does 14th lvl Cleric have that Cleric X / Uber-Cleric-PrC Y does not?

Feat or skill limitations based upon needing to fufill entry requirements into a PrC (Skill Focus [underwater basketweaving]! ...Yay?.) A full-level single-classed spellcaster can take whatever feats he wants. And if a PrC is so powerful that it's a must-take, then I certainly don't want it in my game. I'm looking at you, Radiant Servant of Pelor. The cleric in question was a cleric 5/RSoP 5 when I brought it to my DM's attention that the PrC was stupid broken, so he agreed to allow me to retool the character as a simple cleric 10. The DM in me can't abide over-the-top brokenness.

The highest level I've ever reached in a base class was 16th level, which is also the highest level at which I have played a character. He was a psion, and they don't really have any good multiclassing options.

Level 12 Barbarian; started at level 1. Reached a maximum level of 12.

In SWD20 I played a Jedi Guardian from level 7 to 11, and then continued to 13 in Jedi Master, for roleplaying reasons.

I've gone all the way via base classes several times. Most of the campaigns that I get to play in don't make it past level 13 or so, but one wizard I played made it up to 24th level, and I stuck with wizard the whole way through. On the other hand, I've also multi-classed heavily in a few campaigns. So, I'd say that my base class loyalty is about 50%... give or take.

I haven't played many characters in the higher levels. A monk 9 in AD&D, and a Ranger 12, iirc. Also in AD&D. A bard 10 in 3.5, but he started at level 10. I ghosted a Druid5/Swanmay 6 for a while. But give my choice, I would have gone Druid 11.

I suppose I play multiclassed characters about a third of the time, but so far it has always been in the base classes, and more for flavour reasons. Xavier, a Paladin started in Aristocrat to reflect his heritage; Lucan, a pit fighter (monk), switched to cleric to reflect his growing spirituallity, for example.

Mostly, when I am in a class, I just enjoy seeing the character progress through it.
