I voted for 2 and 3 because we're somewhere in between there. Our sessions are usually more like 4-6 hours, but at least 1/3 of that time is just BSing.

WOW!

My last Planescape campaign (13/15th level party of 5 PCs) needed *at least* 2/3 hour of RT for each combat encounter, (many spellcasters involved) and our weekly session were 4 hours long (more or less)...

I followed the 3.5 rules quite strictly and we needed *at least* 12/15 session for a single level... (generally a module-equivalent adventure).

A new meaning to the term dungeon-CRAWL? :\

Other: when I say so.

I've fell out of using XP in my games now, because I feel it hinders my ability to create adventures for my group. Now, when the group has finished a major quest/overcome a big obstacle/done some great deed, I say, "great, you guys are now level X! Level up!"

cheers,

After giving it some thought, I guesstimated that in our campaigns we level in an average of 6 sessions. I always thought we were going rather slowly. It depends on the GM and campaign, though. In one campaign we've reached 14th level after 3 years of twice-monthly play, 3 or 4 hours per session. But another campaign with a different GM has reached 7th level after a year of weekly play, 6 hours per session.

Honestly, I'd rather move much more slowly. When I GM, I target a "sweet spot" in levels and do what I can to make sure that the game stays in the sweet spot. Running in the sweet spot means more to me than having a campaign with the same characters carry on for an extended period of time anyway.

I was going to put "1" but I suppose my sessions have usually been eight hours (so "2" by your standards) and they did sometimes go more than one session in-between levels.

So, 2-4 by your four hour standard.

Easy math: in our 3.x game (with slowed advancement) we've just done session #255 and the highest level PCs are 11th; the average is 9th-10th. That said, none of the PCs that were around for session #1 are still going; the currently-most-senior PC started in session #11 (I know this because it's mine, and noted on the character sheet :) ), but it's been the same "party" all along.

So, the senior PCs are going up about a level every 20-22 sessions; for the lower-level types I'd guess it's more like 1 in 12.
