How Has the Internet Changed the Way You Game?

Did I say the importance of COPY RIGHTS and talking like a pirate!
Ye nevar mentioned talking like a pirate lad!

Actually thinking about my most regular gaming group I'm only there because of the internet (and ENWorld).

Of course things like DTP coming along changed gaming as well as it made it far easier for an amateur to produce a professional looking publication (and some horrendous looking ones too).

I think there must be a bit of a generation gap with this thread between the grognards like myself, Diaglo, S'Mon, Henry, etc who were used to working with pen and paper and advertising for players in FLGS and the younger gamers who don't really remember a time pre-internet (there are some teenagers here after all).

The Internet has had a huge impact on my gaming.

It's allowed me to discuss the hobby with many other people with different experiences & ideas than my own. These discussions have influenced how I play.

It's allowed me to have direct interaction with people like Gary Gygax, Frank Mentzer, Rob Kuntz, & Steve Marsh--to name just a few. Besides being veteran gamers & having the influence from the previous point, they can also shead new light on their works that didn't make the printed page.

It's given me access to some amazingly good free games & material. And knowledge. I've leaned much on the knowledge of the Citizens of the Imperium Classic Traveller forum while running my current Traveller campaign.

It allowed me to reunite with my old high school group for some over-the-Internet gaming that was a lot of fun while it lasted.

I can remember the world pre-Internet (I remember when computers used punch cards), but I can't imagine gaming pre-Internet. I find so much information here, and there are so many websites with more info than I could every possibly need. There are a lot of things I wouldn't know or have without the Internet. I'd like to be able to buy every D&D book, but the budget won't support that, and luckily some kindly folks provide PDFs. The Internet also allowed me to make friends with people who live thousands of miles away, people I would never have any other way of meeting even if I spent my entire life traveling.

And of course forums, so I can spend way too much time goofing off here. :p

Very little impact, but not nothing:

1) Availability, reviews, and other book information
2) I think I've gotten a map or two...
3) I can email a few ideas that I typed up at work to home (and vice versa).

The Internet, per se, has had some influence on my gaming, but not as much as might be expected.

I have found my idea of what makes a good rpg session, as opposed to more "mainstream" players, is a rather odd fish. And I found this out primarily by looking at campaign information on the internet. Until the net all I had was access for a few widely scattered groups. Now I have a more general idea how people play. And, I find, I am not in the mainstream... ;)

I have also been able to find contacts for people in less mainstream games (and gaming styles). While in the past I was pretty much limited to people who played D&D, GURPS, and Vampire, now it is easy to find people who play many other games, including some of the obscure ones! This is a real boon and makes me feel like I'm not so alone out there. :)

I have been able to find out about upcoming products more rapidly. I also have been able to purchase some fine products, or simply download them in certain cases.

I have been able to more readily find photos and sounds that help enhance my games. I could do this before, but now I do it with speed!

And it is easier to keep the group in contact, since my gamers are spread quite a long ways apart. We have a Yahoo group that keeps us much more together and organized. In the Old Days I would have had locals as my fellow gamers; now I have Commuter Gamers! ;)

As for research, I've gained a bit there, but still tend to fall back to books, libraries and museums. Just my way...

Still, in the aggregate, I have found the Net a very useful item!
