in most of the games i play with my group we cut things off somewhere around 12th to 15th lvl, because after that it gets too individual. ymmv

i was just wondering where the rest of you cut off your adventuring lives...

Higher than 10th level is just too much of a headache IMO. When I play, I tend towards spellcasters, and to really do justice with those classes, you've got to buff your teammates and keep track of those buffs. Haste, Fly, Shield of Faith, Magic Vestment, Bull's Strength, there's a lot to lay down and a lot to remember. If you've got a specific enemy lined up (such as a dragon or powerful undead), it can take an hour (real time) or so to do the proper prep before going off to fight.

And that's just from the player side of the table. On the DM side, it's even more of a pain.

IMO, it's all downhill after 10th level. I don't mind playing games of those level, but I vastly prefer the low-level stuff.

I go where the characters and the story want to go. I don't limit all my games to the same range of levels. Some go high, some stay low.

I voted 6-10 because my longest running campaign (2e) only made it to 8th level, but in reality, I don't stop because of levels. Generally my campaigns end for other reasons, such as myself or a number of players moving to a different area.

My current campaign (first 3e) has just reached 2nd level. I'm not sure how high it will go but am looking forward to finding out.

I didn't vote. Generally speaking, my friends and I are sick of low level play. Right now we are entering high level for the first time in 3rd ed. and we are loving it. Yes, managing buffs and whatnot can be tedious, but the characters are so powerful it's worth it. Also, we're getting to fight the cool monsters we've only read about for years. Together we play in 3 campaigns, and one is low level, one is entering midlevel, and one is knocking on high levels. Of those three, the high level is the most fun for me. Levels 1-10 is very much a "been there, done that, bought the t-shirt" experience for me.

Prior to the current high-level campaign, my highest character ever had been 7th level. I'm done with that.

Even though I cringe at all the work one has to do to stay on top of a 10+ level character, I'm committed to bringing a group all the way from 1st to 20th.

Epic? Nah. Epic's no fun.

Ditto, me too, and amen.

I go until the campaign's over. Whether that's 6th or 16th doesn't matter.

I'm not a huge fan of the epic rules, but I'll even go that far if the campaign calls for it.

Sixth level is the highest my players have made it and that was 2nd Edition.

So far in 3E the highest is 5th level (RtTTOEE) and I won't cap it. I would love to see how far my group can go.

Usually a group or campaign ends due to someone leaving the group or death of a character.

Heh. That's true. In our high level campaign the characters were 16th level and encountered beholders. Our reaction. Oh no! Beholders. Alright, everyone be careful, do this that and the other thing, and we should survive.

Turns out beholders are soap bubbles for 16th level characters. We killed 3 of them in the first round, and the 4th at the beginning of the next round. They zapped the heck out of the fighter, but the saves were easy to make (think he needed a 3 or higher, and we had spells and scrolls to bring him back to life if he failed).

I admit that was kind of fun, but I wasn't DM-ing it. :)
