How is modern?

For those who have played or GMed it. How "fun" is D20 Modern? And what kind of games have you run with it? I already know the D20 system, so that is no trouble.

My gaming group has enjoyed it considerably. We've mostly run various crime dramas and action-movie type games, to be able to keep the campaign running despite the insane carnage following most interactions between PCs and anything involving a plot. We were running a Star*Drive game with it, but due to a vacation on my part and some of my players moving away during this vacation, that game has ended.

In my own personal opinion, d20 Modern is the best implementation of the d20 system that has been published. It makes incredible, versatile use of the class system-- a mechanic most people associate with straitjackets. All of the classes provide some tangible and interesting class ability at every single level, and the three-tiered class system allows a large degree of customization both for individual characters and for setting definition. d20 Modern combines the abstract "heroic" damage system of D&D with a gritty, dangerous element, and better represents reaction to combat injuries better than either a plain hit point system or a "death spiral" system.

Honestly, if you removed the modern technology from d20 Modern and used the material from Urban Arcana, you could use the d20 Modern system to run a pseudo-medieval fantasy game superior to baseline D&D, and I would like to see Fourth Edition bearing a far stronger relation to d20 Modern than D&D 3.5.

i'd have to agree. i've always been positive on d20 Modern, but i'm finding i'm liking it more and more compared to D&D.

and like Korimyr, i'd just love to do a d20 Modern-based fantasy campaign.

I'm not sure what this question means; a game system isn't inherently fun or unfun, it's just a system. How does it play? Very well, thanks, the base classes are well layed-out, a couple of tweaks differentiate it from D&D, and it's easy to use for whatever you want.

We have run a long-term modern shadowchasers/urban arcanaish game, which was my first experience with the system. We also did a shorter action-movie type game starring some escaped convicts, with no fantasy elements of any kind. I'd like to run a game of pulp action involving dirigibles and biplanes in the western pacific, but right now we're playing Hunter (from White Wolf), so I'll see where we go after that.

Our group is beginning work on this. Our plan is to use the base classes from Modern, allow the base classes from D&D as advanced classes, use Defense as opposed to AC, go with a VP/WP system vs. HP, and completely re-write the magic system.

OK, so when we get done it might not be recognizable, but it should be damn fun! :D

Been running Shadow Chasers monthly for some time now, and it is the best RPG campaign my group has ever taken part in. (and those are the words of my players!)

I also like the rules slightly better than D&D, as they are similar, but seem slightly easier for everyone to pick up. Game play is slightly quicker, but this could be from growing experience.

Anyway...Modern is good! :)

Darn straight, and I'm excited about it too!

Most everyone in our group is favoring the modern "system" over the base system in D&D because of the increased flexibility, etc.

We have had a total blast with our modern game so far, as you can tell from the Story Hour in my sig.

I pretty much have come to a point that I dont want to play D&D unless we have a class system much like Modern (non-occupation based) or some similar system that is flexible enough to accomodate varied character concepts without having to rely on tired old cliches. Dont get me wrong, I love fantasy and D&D, but it just feels too rigid and stereotypical anymore, whereas in Modern its so much easier to change a few professions/advanced classes/feats and fit it to pretty much any time period or genre.
