How long does it take to drink a beer?

I just wanted you to know that this has been one of my favorite threads ever. But it might just be that today is Day 70 of my being on the wagon and it has gotten to the point where I call beer's name across the night from the rooftops. ;)

A potion is, like, 1 oz., and it takes a standard action to drink. A typical beer is 12 oz.

It's I oz in weight by D&D encumbrance guidelines; doesn't mean it's a liquid ounce. I'd say it's half a pint of liquid at minimum, probably more. A liquid ounce is a tiny amount.

Also, a pint is 16 oz, not 12.

And a pint is a pound all the world round...

so a 1 oz (by weight) potion would equate to 1 oz of liquid by volume (16 fluid oz in 1 pint, 16 oz in 1 pound - British measurements aren't all obtuse). Of course, this assumes water but presumably a suspension or solution would be HEAVIER by volume, not lighter. so a 1 oz potion by weight should be equal to or less than a fluid oz.

Thanks for making the point I was about to DreamChaser.

If you consider the weight of an ounce of ink, in a vial weighs effectively nothing, but the same vial unfilled is a tenth of a pound. The same for flasks, an empty one's a pound and a half, but a filled one's only a pound! So all weights and measures should be taken with a grain of salt.

That is of course unless it's meant to be added together, so that the contents of a flask or vial are to be added to the weight of it's container, in which case my character is very heavily overburdened now.

Speaking of potions and their containers... Why aren't there more flasks (holds a pint or 16 'potions') of cure light wounds? I mean seriously, if you're going to be guzzling the stuff like it's going out of fashion you may as well toss it in a waterskin and be done with it!

Of course as someone who recycles it stuck me as odd no one keeps track of all those fiddley vials and flasks left over after they've used their ink, acids, anti toxins, and potions. A single vial is a gp, and while a flask is only 3cp it adds up to quite a bit after some time.

In one adventure I put down a load of 'treasure' including bunch of copper pieces, some silver, and an occasional gold piece, and a pile of 'used' adventuring equipment that was worth over twice as much (per pound and total), but the group scoffed at the veritable mountain of treasure that laid before them and grumbled over the 'meager' amount the bandit had squirreled away.

Magical beer of heroism. It should be cheaper than a potion because a potion is move to retrieve + standard to drink. Beer is move to retrieve, a move to open (even if they didn't have bottle caps back then that you have to pry off, working out a cork is tough), and at least a round to drink, probably more.

See, there you go.

How long it takes to drink an oversize potion is completely different than how long it should (typically) take to drink a typical beer. ;)

The SRD says: "A typical potion or oil consists of 1 ounce of liquid held in a ceramic or glass vial fitted with a tight stopper." I imagine potions in D&D as more like shot glasses.

And a typical American long-neck beer bottle is 12 oz.

And further proof that everything exists on the internet: Buffy/The Fox crossover fanfiction.

On topic: Beyond Monks has drinking rules that served me quite well.

He's got several feats to make this possible:
Quickdraw
Quick-quaff
Two-Fisted Drinking
Improved Two-Fisted Drinking
Exotic Proficiency: Shotgun (a beer)

Did you ever consider a beer helmet? (aka beer hat!)

You could drink it in combat!

Giant round mug attached to your head with a intestine cord as a straw.
