20 something years...and this poll sort of matches the age poll, in that there is some bulging around 24-25 years, which means people started playing back in the day
when D&D was a phenomanon--and when the stuff that people still feel all that nostalgia for was coming out.

Still, the distribution here is flatter. One reason: some people are not counting long breaks in playing, and the pole is set up a little differently, hmm

It's been 25 years here.

Started with the blue boxed set and ended up volunteering to run my group of intrepid players through the Keep on the Borderlands.

I think we reached the low end of the scale when my party asked if everything did weapon damage and successfully convinced me to agree that anything would cause at least 1 hp of damage on a hit. Thus the infamous "Large Sack" purge of the 1hp Kobold population began...

:\

hmmm....not sure what to answer here. I started playing D&D when I was 10, then gave it up when I was 14, then played other RPGs for a couple of years when I was 18-20, then started playing D&D again 8 years ago. I would have probably continued to play D&D if I knew people who played it in high school and college. So I guess, my official answer is 12 years, though unofficially 23. :p

I got the famous red box Basic set as a Christmas present from my cousins when I was about 11 or 12. Can't remember the exact date or time. I played until I was 16, then stopped for about 10 years and resumed when 3e came out. During that down time I occasionally checked to see what was up in the game, but I think it was 3e and widespread internet access that brought me back.

25 years

Still running the same 1st ed AD&D campaign that started in 1980 as a 1st ed AD&D game w/a little 2nd ed & 3e influence.

I did take a few years off from gaming due to work, family etc

It will be 15 years in November. I started about the same time 2E came out, so I never had a chance to play 1E. Thats okay, I heard it was horrible in comparison! Just kidding! Uhhh...put down the pitchfolks would ya guys? I was only joking! Ahhhhh!!! ::Runs in fear::
