Geez, how do you guys afford it? Is gaming your only hobby? Maybe I just suck with money.

Well, it's a couple of things. PDFs are definitely cheaper than actual books, I tend to shop at places like eBay/half.com, amazon and overstock.com, so I find books are much cheaper there. And for the record, I have lots of other hobbies, some of which are much more expensive. :D

I polled 100+ books, because I've been playing since 1980.

Basic D&D/ Xpert D&D
1ed (all the hardbacks 75% of the modules)
2ed (99% of the hardbacks +splatbooks)
3/3.5e (so far about 90% of what's been printed, save Eberron [though it's day shall come]

I get a lot of good deals at the local used book stores on what my wife likes to call "them monsta books."

Ditto, also look for bulk buys... I know that I pretty much got a whole set of Legends and Lairs, including the lore books, about 4 dups and 5 of there anthologies for 200 dollars... but only cause I bought them all at once.

I've dealt straight from avalanche like a distributor would... You need to break a 100 bucks but it's worth it.

Ditto... My d20 books are child's play next to my comic book collection.

Well, voted 60-100, but its closer to a hundred, ah 'ell, maybe it's over 100. Shoot one of these days I've gotta learn to count (and read a clock, and tie my shoestrings, etc...)

You aren't one of those strange sorts (many of whom I've met) who equate books with magazines are ya? Just have to throw that out there...

In any case, my collection has shrunk a lot the last few years, but it stands like this right now;

DnD related (all WotC/D20) - 20
Myth or Folk Tales - 30
Fiction (Sci-Fi, Fantasy and general fiction ) - 40
Theater/Poetry/Philosophy - 80
Genealogy - 5
Humor - 10
History - 180 or so.

Numbers rounded a bit. Maybe a library of 400+. Got them lying about in some rooms. The rest are on shelves.

I marvel at the fact that this would make me remarkable just 200 years back or so. At one time I had easily four times what I own now.

For those of you with books approaching (or exceeding) the thousands, have you actually read them all? Do you get them for just one part that you use or do you actually read the whole thing?

And are we talking regular size sourcebooks? When I think of books, I'm thinking of at least the size of, say, the 3.0 splat books (Sword and Fist, Masters of the Wild, etc), 80 pages or so. Are you guys counting smaller books?

I thought maybe the older gamers may have read that many by virtue of the longer time they have been gaming, but age can't be that big of a factor, since d20 has only been out for a few years.

It still blows my mind that there are even that many d20 books out there. I would have guessed a few hundred, maybe as high as 500.
