How many cohorts can a PC have and figuring out XP.

In the DMG, under cohort, it states that there is no limit to the number of cohorts a PC can get. Does that mean if a PC qualifies for a cohort of level 5, he can have as many level 5 cohorts as he wants?

I didn't understand how to determine XP when a cohort is in a party. The cohort is included in the determining the members of the party, but does not share in the final XP award? I use Acardy's XP calculator when I give out XP, so I don't know how it would work if there is a cohort in the party.

As far as number of cohorts goes, the Leadership feat entitles you to one cohort. If you want another, you'd need to take the feat again.

For determining XP, ignore the cohort. He's not there.

EDIT: Fixxing rulespeak. :)

Divide the cohort’s level by the level of the PC with whom he or she is associated (the character with the Leadership feat who attracted the cohort).

Multiply this result by the total XP awarded to the PC and add that number of experience points to the cohort’s total.

So, let's say a 10th-level PC with a 6th-level Cohort gained 1000 xp on an adventure.

The cohort would gain: (6/10)*1000, or 600xp.

If, instead, the cohort were 8th-level, he'd gain 800xp.

*Unless* that 800xp were enough to make him 9th-level. In that case, he'd earn just enough to be 1 xp shy of 9th-level, and would remain there until the PC became 11th-level.

Of course, all feats that can be taken more than once have a footnote to that effect... and Leadership isn't one of them...

A character can have only 1 cohort, as you can only take Leadership once. However, there's nothing stopping a cohort that qualifies from also taking Leadership and getting a cohort of his own. And so on.

Things get kind of interesting from there.

Actually you are incorrect.

Pg 104 of the DMG "There are no limits on the class, race, or gender of a character's cohorts, nor limits to the number of cohorts who can be employed by a character."

That's right, you can have as many as you want, but only one at a time. Of course, if one dies, your leadership score will go down.
