How Many Coins in a Sack of Gold?

And here I was trying to figure out how many coins would be in a bag of gold. 
A thread I read last week and something one of my players was talking about might be of use. We were talking about magic items that are not the big 3 everyone has to have and may not even be good to have, except for certain situations or for flavor. I might even limit it to a number of levels below the party, like 5 or so. The player was looking for a everfull keg of ale, level3 item for their stronghold. It is not something they tend to put on a wishlist.

Last session, we tallied up the gold we had collected so far and split it up. Each PC could by up to an 8th level item.
I bought Hedge Wizard's Gloves (4th) and a Bag of Holding (5th). Not only that, but half of our money remained after the shopping trip.
Not every player is a minmaxer, and not all optimizers are powergamers.
