how many homages to original cover to 1st ed AD&D phb?

The original 1st ed AD&D player's handbook cover had a big demon statue, with a thief trying to pry out one of its huge gemstone eyes.

I recently bought Dungeons and Zombies and saw a similar cover (though the big statue was skeletal rather than demonic).

Now I am wondering how many other "homage" covers are out there?

I think a Dragon Magazine had that picture as part of their caption contest. One of the two captions received was "Give it up, we've been at it for 30 years, that gem isn't coming out." Or something to that effect.

The Hackmaster PHB is very similar.

There's an encounter in the 1st ed module "The Mines of Bloodstone" in which the players come across that statue with those gems. The gems are worth 50k each, iirc.

It's not a cover homage, but in the CRPG Temple of Elemental Evil, you can run into another adventuring party that's on its way to "a place down south with a big idol whose eyes are gems the size of your head" or some such quote. Clearly referring to the original PHB cover. I got a chuckle out of it.

There was an homage painting in the 1995 reprint of the 2nd edition DMG, the angle shown from the ceiling and looking down.

The module L3 contains a text reference to the idol, and it is mentioned the sculpting is meant to represent Baalzebul (as he appears in OAD&D).

Wow, a lot of this idol lore I did not know.

Wish I had L3- anyone know if there's a place you can download it or anything?
