I voted "something else entirely," because I honestly don't care. If we had 60 levels in the next edition, and each level was half as important, would it matter? No.

I think it's a flawed poll...

Today everyone knows that 4e is going to have 30 levels -> all fanboys vote 30

Yesterday no one knew -> all fanboys would have voted 20

I voted 40, or unlimited is good. I think the power level across those levels should be roughly equivalent across 3e levels 1-10, or maybe 3-12. Apparently they're aiming in 4e for 30 levels equivalent to 3e levels 4-14, which is pretty close to my preference.

I have had only one campaign go epic during the 3E era. I would really like to play more epic campaigns to get a feel for if I agree with level caps. I would like the rules to be limitless so everyone could make their own decisions after experiencing epic play.

If there must be advancement rules beyond the cap (be it 30 or wherever), they should do at least one, if not both, of the following:

1) Offer a truly different game experience, not just higher numbers and optional mechanical systems.

2) Assume some form of divine ascension.

Even if mechanics are kept basically same - I believe the gaming experience would be radically different from the lower levels. It was in the one epic game I ran. The level of power the PCs wielded dictated this. I don't see the need for a change in the basic mechanics and assumptions of the rules to accomplish this.

As many as you want it to. I don't think this means that lvl 50 needs to be statted out on some chart or anything, I just think that there can be simple rules for advancement beyond level x.
