How many Powers in the PHB?

Speculation:

Average of 5 powers every time you pick powers (probably more at lower levels, fewer at high)
* 15 levels you gain powers at
* 8 classes in the PHB

= 600 powers.

Seems like a lot but if you can put only 6 on a page, that's still 100 pages, pretty much in line with the spell sections of PHBs past--and it has love for every class!

The Wizard spells page at DDXP showed that the 6 levels of wizard shown - halfway through 10th to halfway through 16th - had 14 powers. If this is typical for all levels of all the classes (which is a very big assumption) then each class will have 70 powers and there will be a total of 560.

I'd add some more powers since there must be a longer list of powers available at first level, where everyone gets 2 at-will and one encounter and daily. Say 80 powers each and around 640 powers total.

How many spells are in the 3.5 PHB?

First, a bit of thread necromancy: "Wake, thread! Rise from your unquiet grave that you might serve your new master!"

From WotC_Dave's preview of his druid:

And what’s in my druid file? The class description, of course, and all the powers (eighty of ‘em at this point, give or take).

Which I think is a hint that a 4e class is designed with about 80 powers. Which if true for the PHB1 would give it about 640 powers, assuming that the powers are all unique.

80 powers by 30 levels = 2 2/3 powers per level, which is peanuts. Expect plenty of splats (but you should have been expecting that anyway).

Oh boy was I expecting splats. The 4e model of spells powers for everyone means splatbooks for everyone as well.

I think there was a quote from one of the developers that we shouldn't expect new classes in the Martial Power splat. Given there are four martial classes in the PHB1 all waiting for new powers this isn't much of a surprise. The divine and arcane classes only have two classes each, so I think they probably will have new classes in their respective splats.

Except of course we already know you won't be getting a new power every level...

every other level makes it about just over 5 per choice, every third level makes it 8 per choice...

Martial Power has been announced and it promises us new powers and feats...

Using my amazing powers of precognition, I foresee at least one (and maybe more) supplemental book for each power source.

200 powers for 8 classes = 25 powers/class (that would equal to around 1 power/level/class, since there are 30 levels*)

I would estimate somewhere around 800-1200 powers.

*not all level get powers, some are feats-only level.

I don't think there is even a chance of that. 600-700, tops, and that would surprise me.
75-80/class is pushing it for this book. Particularly with the magic items and everything else in here, the page count just can't handle much more.

Of course, with what WotC-Dave just revealed for the Druid you can easily deduce that 80 powers x 8 classes = 640 powers. So, yes you're essentially right, and I was over speculating.

Don't forget about paragon paths and epic destinies (they are in PHB, aren't they?). They require a lot less powers probably (20? 30?), but still should be counted to total amount.

My guess would be 60-70 powers per base class (500-600 total) plus 16 paragon paths x 20 (300 total), plus 8-10 epic destinies (another 200), for a total around 1000 powers. Probably possible to fit on 150 pages.
