How many spells are in the PHB?

I'm working on a little project where I'm trying to make a single big spell list, using all the PHB spells. I just finished the spreadsheet page and I've got 588 lines. I think I've got all the spells (including lesser confusion, which isn't on the bard list, at least in my first printing 3.5 PHB), but I could have missed something along the way.

Anyone know the correct number of spells? If I know that, it won't be so hard to doublecheck things. :)

Not to rain on your parade, but I'm pretty sure that you could simply ask a project like PCGEN for the data. There's an xml version of the SRD floating around somewhere too; I think even excel can import that, with a little work.

605. An easy way to count is to open a .doc (like the SRD) and do a find/replace on something that's found in every spell - Level: (with the colon). Put the same thing in both fields, so you're not changing anything, and it'll tell you how many "changes" it made, which is effectively counting the number of spells you've got. I use this for counting spells in our books - it's invaluable, believe me.

Huh. Interesting. I was only counting spells like detect chaos/evil/good/law/funky once, instead of four times each, but I'm still at 600. Either I'm missing 5 or they're including 5 that aren't in the PHB. I'll have to figure out which it is. :)

My count is 604. (plus, for my campaign I also include the spells from the Divine and Psionic sections of the SRD: 20 more [12 divine, 8 psionic]).

Detect, Protection from, Magic Circle against, Dispel (Good, Evil, Chaos, Law).

Ciao
