How many total stat points does your character have?

Yup, I'm asking you to add up your stats for your primary attributes, and let me know your total.

I'm getting ready to run a game and several of my players don't roll, so I have to decide how many attribute points to let them have

(I'm not talking about the point buy system, as I still don't fathom how that works, but rather straight one-for-one point buy [i.e. a score of 18 costs 18 points; a score of 3 costs 3])

Thanks!

In the game I currently play in, my Samurai character currently has 81 pts, including the +1 bump for reaching 4th level. My DM didn't really understand the point method either, and so just gave us 80 pts. to play with.

I use the Point Buy system out of the DMG, giving 30 points. A sample character out of my group currently has 75 points, including one for reaching 4th.

Hope this helps.

X=Ability Score
YsubX=Bonus from Ability Score of X

YsubX=(X-11)/2 , round up

ZsubX=Point Buy Cost of Ability Score X

ZsubX=X-8 X<=12
ZsubX=Zsub(X-1)+Ysub(X-1) X>=13

Easy. :D

Or, explained in words, the point buy cost of 8 is 0, and every further point buy cost is the sum of the previous point buy cost and either the previous ability score bonus or 1, whichever is greater. :)

90 points, but we play a high-magic game where the heroes and villains are several cuts above average. Because of the stat rolling method, it's rare to have more than one 18, but 14's and 16's are common.

Note: the named villains almost always average 85+ in their stats too. Imagine a hill giant/barbarian with those stats added to his racial bonuses... :)

We start off with 92 points. Of course like Sir Whiskers said the Heroes are Heroic and the Villians are Vilianous. We are high magic for the most part and we need all the points we can get to survive the encounters thrown at us.

94, but the party only started with 3 PCs and we have no spell healing ability or front line fighters. So, we went with high abilities to help the characters survive. Even with that the first session was very close to a TPK.

87 points including 3 for stat increases (the PC's 14th lvl now). Everyone else in the party has the same, since we had a flat 84 points to divide among our abilities.

I did a 1=1 point buy for one campaign and it worked well. Players started with 80 points and couldn't go over 18 in any stat. It was pretty high powered but the PCs were facing some tough foes too, and they survived much better with the improved constitution they each invested in. I like using that more than the other point buy, but it really turns out the same if you guage it correctly.
