D&D 5E (2014) How much of the game have you experienced so far?

Might as well count in combinations of spells, equipment, backgrounds and magic items if you want to make it seem your usage is really pathetic and artificially inflate how much content is available.

But, keeping on track, my group has two 3rd level characters and two 2nd level characters, and we've had some additional players swap in and out of the campaign. So far, we've seen:

Human fighter 2 (bow specialty)
Halfling rogue 2
Dragonborn ranger 2 (pirate)
Half-orc fighter 2 (Piker)
Tiefling rogue 2
Half-elf cleric 3 (Lathander)
Goblin (reskinned gnome) Wizard (Summoner) 3
Kitsune (reskinned drow) Monk 1
Kitsune (reskinned drow) Bard 1

I'll let you calculate the %, I'm sure it's less than 1.

Another way to look at my six levels of experience...

2/29 races (added a minotaur race for the dragonlance setting for me!) (~7%)
2/80 classes (~3%)
6/20 levels (3%)

That's still not much, though it's more, through that lens.

Of course, what makes the numbers big is that 6 levels of one class-race combo is not the same as 6 levels of another (6 levels of half-orc valor bard plays different than 6 levels of rock gnome wild sorcerer). So while I've experienced 3% of the available classes, I haven't experienced experienced them in different race combos at different levels...and that adds a LOT of variety.

Like, to "max out" one subclass, I'd have to, play, say, a champion fighter as each of the 28 different PHB races for 20 levels each...and that's hard to do! Maxing out one level would be even harder -- I'd have to play a level 1 character of each different race and class combo. Even if level 1 only lasts one session for each....that's a lot of sessions!

It strikes me that one of the big limitations there is # of levels - a lot of folks are still bouncing around in the sub-level-10. Which speaks a bit to why 5e has accelerated the XP gain over previous e's, if they want more of the content to be experienced by more of the players.

Okay....I've run three campaigns from level 1-5, with one ongoing campaign now at level 6 and another one just about level 7. We might be leveling a tad slow but I'm pretty much handing out XP by the book so YMMV.

I've seen all of the classes in play but not all of the possible archetypes (not even close). I've seen most of the races but somehow my players have shown restraint and no drow or eladrin has been played yet (but I've used both as NPC villains). (EDIT: the new races just released haven't been used yet, but I have one player who retconned his forest gnome into a deep gnome after gaining permission, and another player intends to make a warforged soon).

Both current campaigns are committed to reaching at least level 10-15, and beyond if we're all enjoying high level play.

I've run Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle but haven't even touched the other modules or the Tiamat modules. Probably will never get around to using them since I mostly design my own scenario content anyway.

DM'd up to Level 6. I think we will make it to 7th, but if I run Apocalypse, like i'm planning to now, we might reset to 1st. Sigh. I kinda would like to start at 3rd personally. I can tweak it I guess.

I do not follow the OPs formula, but, FWIW, I'm stuck in the low end of the level range for the foreseeable future as I'm trying to promote 5e at Encounters and with introductory games at conventions. So disproportionately running 1st-4th level.

I suspect it'll be some time before the current 4e campaigns I'm in complete (one is 13-15th after over 3 years, the other 19th after 5 - so it'll be years for either to finish), and we consider the possibility of running a 5e home game where levels could get higher.

Wow! Put in those terms, I'll never experience all 5th Edition has to offer. Especially, when I start thinking about quantifying the number of possibilities that open up with homebrew conversions of previous editions.

Happy gaming!

Dm'd 14 sessions (in 1 campaign - Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle adapted for 5e) since PHB has come out. Players are just about to turn to 6th level.

Played 9 sessions in another campaign (Tempest Cleric only level 3 soon to be 4th - Hoard of the Dragon Queen).

Played 4 sessions in another campaign from Basic (Lost Mines of Phandelver - Evoker Wizard - but we've basically stopped that campaign because we have the other group running and we're using PHB PCs in the other group)

Played about 3 sessions in another set of adventures (Homebrew adaptation of some classic modules- Dwarven Barbarian - but we only play this one when we can't get enough for our main groups).

I haven't even scratched the surface of what the game has to offer.

In the interest of quantification.

If you've only played Basic, there are 340 possible levels to experience Basic D&D: 4 races * 4 classes * 20 levels each + 20 levels of DMing.

If you're playing with the PHB, there are 80 classes (including subclasses), 28 races, and 20 levels + 20 levels of DMing for 2,260 total levels.

I'm simplifying the DMing side - I could also figure out how many monsters it takes to get enough XP to get a level and compare that against the total number of different monsters in the MM, but I don't know a reliable way to get that first number over 20 levels (happy to accept help from fellow quants, though! ;)).

So take the number of levels you've played, put it over the total possible for the style you're playing in and figure your percentage.

For my Monday group, for instance, we're level 6, so we've each had 1 class for 6 levels, and 1 DM, and we're using the PHB, so we've each (including the DM) experienced roughly 0.2% of the content of 5e so far personally. And with 5 regular players + 1 DM, that'd be about 1.2% of the game as a group (minus the people who haven't been there for the whole thing).

So, what percentage of the game's experience have you actually played through yourself? What about your group as a whole?

This calculation is part of what reminds me that "more content" is rapidly diminishing returns...I haven't experienced even 1% of the current content of the game! And that's probably true even when you add all my separate groups together!

How about you?

Let me see...

I've played up to 8th level twice, I've run up to 5th level twice (game is on hiatus while people deal with health issues) Getting ready to play another fighter, battlemaster this time, next week in a new game.

Now, I've playtested all the way up to level 20 several times, as well, but that is definitely not the same thing as actually getting the experience of playing it.
