How much time do you devote your campaign?

I spend a lot of time prepping for game, maybe as much time as I actually spend playing the game. For one thing, I like prepping. I have fun writing up all the bad guys, their strategies, their plots and plans. For another thing, I can't wing things worth spit, and I am trying to move away from railroading. So I always prep two adventures sprouting off of the adventure the players are currently on, including brief outlines for the two adventures sprouting off each of the ones I just prepped. Then if I have time I go back and update some of the old adventures they didn't do, in case they decide to go back and do them. And I always have to have a "random encounter" ready to slow them down if they head off towards something I haven't prepared.

It really varies depending on the campaign. Right now I'm leading our group through RttToEE, and I put about 45 minutes to an hour into prep each night on average. That doesn't take into account the 15-20 hours I spent reading everything, taking notes, and visiting Monte's website before we even commenced the module.

Other campaigns require differing amounts of prep time on my part. I also tend to adjust my prep time based on how smoothly the sessions seem to be flowing. If things are going well, then I know I'm devoting enough time to preparation. If not, well, then I try to spend a little extra time ironing out the kinks.

Campaign Time

I'm one of those guys always planning on starting a campaign so I would say I spend alot of time thinking about it.

After reading the comments about thinking about DnD in the shower, at work, downtime, etc. reminded me of one of the reasons I dig DnD so much.

Thinking about DnD in my free time keeps me tickin'. When Im bored, stressed, happy, sad thinking about the grand ole game is what I do to keep on keepin on.
