The last line of the Listen skill on page 79 of the PH says this:

A sleeping character may make Listen checks at a -10 penalty. A successful check awakens the sleeper.

Interesting. Since "people talking" is DC 0, anyone with a listen modifyer can "take 10" and won't get any sleep as long as people are talking.

:D

It takes me about 10 minutes to get up. Maybe 5 if you're shaking me. I say we go for worst case and use me as the example. So 30 rounds to wake up if continuously shaking the sleeping character! Yeah that sounds good MUAH. Remember being the DM is GOOOOOD

That's true, but only at less than 10 feet, since each 10 feet gives a -1 to the check.

I don't think I'd let people take 10 on listen checks while sleeping. Yep, in fact I know I wouldn't. Although I smell a feat called Lightsleeper that would allow it and maybe half the sleeping penalty.

I have seen this addressed before on the DND-L (D&D list) and we have been on a lengthy discussion...

I started to use the idea of a listen check with -10 DC, reducing the penalty by 2 every round the noise continues... I think I would keep my rule, call of ctuhlu works for paranoid ambient, not for D&D stressed characters after a battle, maybe use the -5 for a dungeon or other very dangerous area, but the time without proper sleep or how much strenuous action was taken would modify...

No take tens, must roll, not consciously attent, and also would make it a full round, always did, you are awake, next round you act...

I'd say that it's really a matter of how long it takes to go from dreaming to awake enough to react. Once you're awake enough to react, it's sometimes faster than when you're fully awake because you don't take the time to think, you just act.

For instance, a while ago there was a hornet flying around my head while I was asleep (and I really hate/fear hornets), and it might have been a minute before I was awake enough to recognize the sound, but as soon as I did, I bolted out of bed and managed to make it downstairs to the kitchen before I was truly conscious.

If that had been a moderately long-winded scream, I would have been on my feet by the time they finished.

Another thing, about not getting any sleep because of high Listen skills, I think a high skill in listen has more to do with learning picking out relevent noises rather than just hearing all the same stuff louder....so a high skill gives you a qualitative improvement rather than a quantitative improvement.

Oh, and I think elves can go out of their trance really fast...
