How much would this item cost

I was wondering how much a magic item that gave the truestrike spell as a continous affect would cost.

I come up with the following when I did it.

Spell Level = 1
Caster Level = 1
Multiplier for use activated or continous x 2000

1 * 1 * 2000 = 2000

It says that when applying a spell measured in rounds multiply it by 4 so this would be 8,000

Thanks for any info.

I would say such an item would be incredibly powerful. It's silly to even for a moment think you could get such an item for 8000. The whole point of the spell is that it takes a standard action to cast it.

I would start by looking at the cost of a continuous item of Quickened True Strike. That will get you a more accurate price. So 1st level spell increased by four levels is a fifth level spell. Minimum caster level is 9th level. So 9 x 5 x 2000 = 90,000.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Well, the normal price for a insight bonus to attacks rolls is bonus^2*2000 gp. Bonuses over +5 are epic magic items, and get a x10 price multiplier. So the final price for a +20 insight bonus to attack rolls is 20^2*2000*10 gp, or 8,000,000 gp.

Then hand it to a fighter-20 with Power Attack. With even a one handed weapon, he trades 10 points of BAB for 10 points of damage per attack, still keeps +10 of the to-hit, and thus is, for many intents and purposes, wielding a +10 weapon.

Hand it to a greatsword wielding barbarian-20 with Power Attack, and he trades 10 of the to-hit out; he gets: +20 damage, +10 to hit, for one feat and a fairly cheap 8,000/90,000 gp item? If he wants to keep it roughly even, he trades 7 points of attack bonus out for +14 damage, and +13 to hit; it basically turns any of his two-handed weapons into +13 weapons. Not in my campaign, at least, not at that price.

A +10 sword hits the epic rules, and is nominally priced at 2,000 * 10^2 * 10 =
2,000,000 gp. A ring of Continuous True Strike is more useful than a +10 sword (except when attempting to penetrating Epic DR) and stacks with a +10 sword (Insight vs. Enhancement). As such, it should be more expensive than a +10 sword, not less, by the clause about comparing to items of equivalent power.

That looks about right.

I2K, who welcomes yet another true-strike-for-2K thread ;)

Why do people even bother to ask...? unless they really really support HEAVY powergaming... everyone must be able to see that is a +1 sword cost about 2000... then a continious ability that grant +20 to hit must cost alot more
(8000 IT NOT alot more)

I'd price it as 8,000,000 too

According to the guidelines for item pricing in the DMG, this is indeed correct. An inexperienced DM might therefore allow this price, not realizing the error in blindly following guidelines that aren't meant to be hard rules. A more experienced DM would flat out disallow such an item. An even more experienced DM might inflict the PC of a player who asked for this with a particularly nasty supernatural disease that cannot be removed.

Theres a wizards article that uses the true strike as an example of the rules not accounting for every situation, and it gives a suggestion for a reasonable pricing.
