It's even more weird, when one PC graduated magical academy after five years of study and another PC simply choose wizard as his new class when he advances at new level.

Not weird at all!
A common case of what I call Reverse-Background-Engneering!
(I always practised magic/bungee-jumping/charioteering during spare times did't you know?) ;-)

However, I'd be more interested in how often a group levels up per hour of game play--this would more accurately measure how fast leveling up occurs in that campaign (i.e. "1 level/month" doesn't explain how often the group plays for how long each session). 'Course, you might have had other reasons for framing the question the way you did.

Right. I thought the how many levels per week/month was an odd way of looking at it--especially in my case where the frequency of gaming has changed over the course of the 9 year campaign (yes, we adapted our 2e campaign to 3e). Also, we don't game over the summer when there are so many outside distractions...gotta enjoy the warm weather when it's here.

Since our group found the "standard" advancement rate for 3e a bit steep, we scaled it back a bit so the players would have more of a chance to use their shiny new skills before leveling up yet again. They were originally leveling about every 4 sessions (16 hours of play) and I backed it off to about once every 6 sessions (24 hours of play). Over the course of the 6+ years spent playing 3e, it averaged out to leveling after every 20 hours of game time.

Then you can go and enjoy the many other polls we've had that look at hours/level or sessions/level (with a determined length of session). I do think Hussar had one up earlier. Go visit it.

This poll examines what feels right in real time, and complements the other poll.

Our group manages to play for 6-8 hours every week and we level about once a month. It gives the players a chance to really discover their character's abilities and allow the character's to develop naturally. Then again we play modified classes that gain a new ability every level so no one has to contend with dead levels.

William Holder
