My group plays once every one or two weeks for about 6 hours. I award XP for roleplaying, and while that means I need to scale up the adventures they go through as they gain level quicker, it usually means they can get a level every three or four sessions.

We gain levels fast, about every other week. It's becasue we have 2 players so more XP for each, we get more things done and it goes faster with just the two and I don't treat the party like they are 2 PCs. I'd run the game with the same encounter if there were 2 PCs or 6. We game for about 6 hours a week, I do reward XP for role playing and other non traditional awards.

They leveled up quite quickly while they were low-level, but now the plot is thickening, and I want them to earn their advancement, so the XP are drying up a bit. They've gone from leveling up every two or three weeks to every two or three months.

My group's levels are pretty varied, though the gap's narrowing... but they range from 17th-23rd right now. So some of them level every two games or so, and some every five to seven.

I voted monthly; that seems about right (we play at least weekly; we squeeze in more extra games than we miss).

In recent memory, I haven't leveled much. The reasons behind it are alternating campaigns, lapses between games and multiple (and I mean MULTIPLE) deaths.

If I had to put an average number on an average campaign, I'd say we level every 2-3 months?

Back when I was running a weekly game, the characters would take 2-3 sessions to complete an adventure, so the PCs leveled about every 2.5-3 months. I have found that IMC, having 3-4 adventures per level allows the characters to get a good grip on their abilities while still giving a sense of accomplishment. I don't like the EL/XP chart in the DMG- characters advance WAY too fast and have no time to become familiar with their abilities before gaining a whole new set of powers.

I agree with Gothmog and I have restructured how I do experience now.
BUt I will say I prefer to GM games under 10th level so it is somewhat of a taste thing for me.

Between alternating campaigns and scheduling problems the real world time between levels varies a lot. But in sessions I'd say about every 5 sessions of one campaign.
