How should falling be handled in 4E D&D?

  • Just like previous editions, 1d6/10ft to a maximum (usually 20), let Massive Damage do the rest.

  • Damage to a maximum, but with SWSE-style impairment rules based on the amount.

I mentioned it in the other thread, so I'll mention it here too.

My preferred method is to stick with 1d6 per 10ft fallen, but with an extra twist - that damage is rolled per injury, and you suffer 1d6 injuries when you hit the ground.

Someone really lucky (air hostesses?) might roll 1 injury and only get 10 on the 10d6 (all 1's) and survive.

Someone really unlucky might fall 10ft and roll 6 injuries, ending up with 6d6 damage.

A 30ft pit trap could end up doing anything from 3d6 to 18d6 damage, and nobody knows how well or badly they are going to land... discouraging any 'superman' style jumps by high level fighters, for instance.

Cheers
