Poll again in 6 months. April it will be about then, 2 months from kick off and see if folks like what they hear more.

I'd bet a lot that most people who don't switch will not be playing D&D regularly in three years.

Given what happened with 3.5 -- which was essentially just enough tweaks to be incompatible with 3.0 -- where almost all active players did, in fact, eventually switch, I think it's safe to predict that the overwhelming majority of regular players will, in fact, switch to 4e. A lot won't do so immediately. But they will eventually.

Agreed. And infact a slower migration will probably help WotC in the long run, keeping the sales of the core books high well after the initial launch...

I'm in the 'don't know if I will' camp. I'm fairly open to the idea of 4e but just have so much 3.5 material that I still want to use. The players in my group feel the same way. They have a lot of character ideas they haven't had a chance to play yet. And I have this nagging suspicion that if I wait a few years there will be a 4.5.

I'm fairly sure that our group will be 3.5 for at least the next one and a half to two years whether we decide to switch or not.

As far as being a DM for 4E you can now move me to the "Never" column. As a player? Depends on how much I like the DM. IE how much I think I'll like how s/he will run things, and how well I get along with the rest of the group.

I'll buy modules, the PH 1, and tiles but that will be it.

I guess our experiences are different because the changes between 3.0 and 3.5 werent enough to make them incompatable for me. I was still pretty much able to use most of my 3.0 adventures with minimal changes for a 3.5 game.

From what I've heard/seen of 4E so far it seems like an almost completely different system. Which is a main part of the reason why I won't be switching over when it comes out. I'll wait until I can get a look at the 4E SRD to see if it's worth actually buying the book. And that's only going to happen if there are things I'll be able to snatch to incorporate into my 3.5 game. If not then it stays on the shelf. At this point I have no doubt that I'll be able to find people who'll be willing to play 3.5 well into the future and if not then it'll be time for me to walk away from D&D.

I voted "never," because I have no intention of "switching." I have my opinions and preferences on what D&D should be like; from what I can tell so far, 4E isn't it. However, that doesn't mean that I won't play 4E. I'll approach it just like any other new game. But it won't be "new D&D" or any sort of replacement, for me.

I'll be buying a copy of the PHB, but out of a group of 8 who rotate GM ing, only one other is interested in it (because he hates 3.0/3.5 and thinks 4ed sounds better), three think it's a good excuse to get hold of 3rd ed stuff cheap and don't want to swap, the others are 'meh' maybe later...
So the answer is maybe later if I can persuade them!

I don't understand. You would rather quit playing D&D than play in a 4e campaign that is being run by a good DM? 4e SRD sight-unseen? And you are only going to use the 4e SRD to tweak your 3.5 game, even if it looks good?

Hypothetically speaking, if you can't play 3.5e because there aren't enough players anymore, what game would you prefer to play to satisfy your high-fantasy RPG desires?
