Regardless, I don't see the point in berating anyone on either side of the argument. Why there's always such a backlash against dissenters I'll never understand.
I think it's the "and you're all stupid chump sheep fanboys if you disagree with me," that they always work into their posts somewhere, that does it.

I'll be getting the core books when they come out.

Other than that it's "when my DM switches over" and I don't know when that'll be. Maybe when the campaign we just started is over - maybe we'll switch at some point and maybe we won't switch for a while afterwards.

I guess my poll choice is "We'll switch when we switch".

I've noted significant self-righteousness and close-mindedness on both sides of the argument. A few individuals, whether they think 4e is the holy grail or an unhallowed chamber pot, shouldn't be the people we look to when it comes to having a debate regarding the future of D&D. EN World exists for the purpose of allowing gamers to exchange news, ideas and opinions about D&D regardless of edition.

I simply think we shouldn't allow the propaganda of either extreme be that which determines our opinion of the individuals with positive or negative leanings towards 4e.

I think that if you look at the places where threads are actually derailed by bad posts, it's never because someone posts a civil criticism of 4E. Actually civil criticism doesn't seem to attract non-civil rebuttals, presumably because the people who like 4E don't feel like they're being set upon by the upcoming edition. They're "winning," so they don't need to resort to invective.

Most of the complaints about people being harassed by 4E "fanboys" have, as far as I've seen, been seeded by negative behaviour on the part of a 4E detractor.

Also, regardless of whether we feed trolls, a vocal minority tends to clog messageboards with whatever it is they're posting and reposting. So even if most people who don't like 4E are civil about it, the anti-4E posts aren't representing this very well.

Its not the objective reality that is in question here. Its the internet reality, about which this is a telling indicator.

Now up to 430 votes with a total of 23 NEVER!!!!'s.

. . . and yet. . . if you journey around various D&D forums, a significant percentage of the threads are rants against the changes started by people who by their own statements would fall into the NEVER!!!! catagory on this poll.

This poll shows that that NEVER!!! crowd on the internet is indeed a small but extremely vocal minority comprising less than 5% of the posters. But it seems they are singularly incapable of shutting up. They seek constant validation from others by looking for agreement on their repeatedly stated opinions. When they don't get as much as they like, they just slightly tweak what they have to say, and do it again. Hence the reason for the innumerable I hate 4E threads seen on many forums.

Maybe. I'm not sure. I suspect many of them ... are simply leaving, wandering away, opting out. Which is fine. That's one key reason for announcing early -- angry, upset people will rant for awhile, then wander away and vanish.

As for me, I can't even 'see' 4e yet. There are a very few facts, some vaguely worded descriptions by designers (intentionally vague), and many many suppositions by fan-boys and haters. I ignore all of the latter. There's not enough of the former for me to tell what 4e will be like.

Ask me again when there IS a 4e and I'll be happy to answer.

How very adult of you. Somehow missed this post the first time through.

I don't understand fan-boys -- there isn't anything to be a fan of yet. Well, perhaps you can just be a fan of change and hope it will be positive.

I don't really understand the haters. I mean, you really can't get any more old school than I am, and I can't muster up any hate for yet another edition of D&D. It will just be another alternative, presumably one better suited to younger players. No skin off my nose ... no graying hair off my old, wrinkly neck.

(Okay, yes, I said I was giving up on posting, but, well, temptation . . .)

For purposes of this poll, I voted "I'm not sure if I will". I'm not going to buy the WotC D&D 4e that is coming out in June, so in that respect I am very much a "NEVER!"

But, I might very well buy a third party "alternate Player's Handbook" that uses the 4e mechanics but a 1e/2e/3e flavor. Might even do an adaptation myself using the 4e SRD (if there is one). Heck, if WotC sales of the original D&D 4e are poor, maybe they'll wind up releasing their own traditionalist version called "D&D 4.1", and I'll buy that.

So, it's quite possible I'll wind up playing 4e rules, and that makes me a "I'm not sure if I will." But I won't be buying WotC's D&D 4e.

I chose "as soon as it's out" because I probably will buy the books as soon as they're out. However, whether we switch in mid-campaign or start a new campaign or whatever, is really up to my game group.

Interesting poll. Less than 50% switching upon release or shortly after.

I would have thought it would be much higher.

(Although this poll might be more telling after the preview books are out in 2 months.)
