How soon will you switch to 4E?

  • As soon as it's out

    Votes: 200 54.6%
  • When they have a decent amount of supplement books. (I.E. "complete" series, or somthing like it)

    Votes: 20 5.5%
  • I don't know if I will.

    Votes: 112 30.6%
  • NEVER!!!

    Votes: 34 9.3%

I voted, "As soon as it's out.", but I will likely also be DMing my 3.5 AoW campaign. I will likely use both rulesets depending upon my player base.

I am really liking what I see in 4e so far, though.

I'm going to buy it fairly quickly. Once the three core books are out, I will run a mini campaign. Following this I will ask my group which version they wish to play.

I voted 'I don't know if I'll switch.'
I'll get the core rulebooks and the FRCS just to have something to base my descision on.
If I like it, I'll switch, if not I'll donate the books to a library.
I have enough 3.x campaign material for a long, long time.

I would point out the sheer, utter, total futility of trying to tie an internet poll to any kind of objective reality, and how 228 people is hardly a representative sample, but I won't bother.

Its not the objective reality that is in question here. Its the internet reality, about which this is a telling indicator.

Now up to 430 votes with a total of 23 NEVER!!!!'s.

. . . and yet. . . if you journey around various D&D forums, a significant percentage of the threads are rants against the changes started by people who by their own statements would fall into the NEVER!!!! catagory on this poll.

This poll shows that that NEVER!!! crowd on the internet is indeed a small but extremely vocal minority comprising less than 5% of the posters. But it seems they are singularly incapable of shutting up. They seek constant validation from others by looking for agreement on their repeatedly stated opinions. When they don't get as much as they like, they just slightly tweak what they have to say, and do it again. Hence the reason for the innumerable I hate 4E threads seen on many forums.

I'll probably be switching based on when campaigns are ending, and when I can get a critical mass of my players to want to switch - all assuming that I like the rules. So none of the options apply. My guess is six months to a year, although one group I'm in will probably switch very early (assuming we stop having players move away, etc and still have a group by that poinit).

This poll doesn't really show anything other than what the people who voted think.

I wouldn't recommend extrapollating it as indicative of what the whole internet crowd thinks.

Count me as "Not really a good set of choices". I think a lot of people who plan on switching will do so when they can find a natural conclusion or switching point of their current campaign. That won't be immediate, but it also won't be a year later when there are a decent number of supplements. It's more like "Relatively soon after the release, but not exactly sure how soon".

There are many ways to skew the results of any poll. I'm not sure you can simply judge it by the "NEVER!!!s." Look at the 215/441 who said "I don't know if I will." Count those two categories together and you've got over half (240/441) of the folks who took the poll who are either on the fence or negatively pre-disposed to 4e.

I voted "I don't know if I will" because it's really too early to say I'll never buy a 4e product. In my opinion, there isn't enough information out yet to make that sort of definitive decision for or against.

That being said, I'm definitely leaning towards "NEVER!!!" based on what I've heard about the game so far. If 4e was released today, I wouldn't be buying it, that much I can attest to. I'll rely on reviews and feedback to inform my ultimate decision.

Regardless, I don't see the point in berating anyone on either side of the argument. Why there's always such a backlash against dissenters I'll never understand. There's room enough for everyone as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know if I will.

I mean, if the reviews would be great and would point towards a streamlined, comfortable-to-play version of D&D without any extreme (i.e. hard to reverse) flavor changes, than eventually (in a year or so) I might switch over. Otherwise, 3.0E serves my needs pretty well.
