I definitely never use specific directions. The players don't have to go to the detail of saying which way they turn at a particular junction or road (unless it's dramatically appropriate, such as a chase scene).
If the PCs know the location of where they're going, then they just need to say "We head back to the inn" or "We head across the city towards the City Hall"; if it's not getting repetitive, I'll give them an overview of the districts they travel through. Maybe some special landmarks or an encounter.
If they don't know - they'll usually ask someone. The guard, or innkeeper, or whoever, tells them how to get where they're going; and then the above process applies.
