How to best help Fighters get shenanigans to bridge the gap to Wizards?

Sounds like pretty sucky supernatural warrior if they are worse at fighting than a non-supernatural one. Is their supernatural power a curse that makes them weak?
The problem is, a spell-wielding class, like a "supernatural warrior", would be swapping out damage in exchange for spells: thus be dealing less damage overall. Spells might allow a damage nova, on occasion. But the damage-per-round reduces.

Other classes make this tradeoff.

Equal.

The supernatural warrior would be a lot more narrow in combat in exchange for whatever out of combat they get out of expanded use of their power.
So when the non-supernatural one squares up with the supernatural one in combat, is it 50/50? How does more narrow help/hurt with the example of fighting demons?

(I'm picturing an arcane knight specializing in just one kind of combat - but that doesn't feel right.)

Voted other.

1. Restrict the Wizard. Its such a boring class, because its so wide open.
2. Nerf the Wizard. It should be a glass cannon, and it should be TERRIBLE at anything outside of spells.
3. Make it harder on the Wizard to have the 'right' spell. Set them in the morning/after long rest, and thats your spell book for the day.
4. Give better access to Fighters, to Magic Items.
5. Make sure Fighters, are the WITHOUT A DOUBT, best Melee combatant in the game.

Simple stuff. ;)

Ideally, yes. Any two D&D classes should be about 50-50 if squaring off against each other in combat.
So what is the role of a "fighter" if it isn't being the best when squaring off against someone else? Especially if some other classes are supposed to be particularly good at some out of combat things?

Is it sweeping up mooks better than a fireball? Is it buffing by blocking for someone else better than a cleric protects? Is it recruiting an army to have tag along with the party?

The Fighter should be the best at reliable damage-per-round.

A duel between Fighter and Wizard might be 50-50 depending on who goes first, with the Fighter one-shotting the Wizard, or the Wizard casting to immobilize the Fighter.

Generally, the Fighter has the edge, where the Wizard might survive an attack but the Fighter save against a spell.

@Yaarel [reply to your last post, I deleted the quote by mistake :-( ]

What do you see as the reason to have a Caramon and Raistlin (or Beren and Luthien) instead of a double of one of them, if they are 50-50?
