How well does Spycraft mesh with d20 Modern?

I just picked up Spycraft 2.0 (looks awesome!) and I have d20 Modern, and I was wondering how well the two systems meshed together? Can I use elements from both interchangeably without too much hassle? What about the fantasy and FX abilities?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen v.2.0 yet, so I don't know if they have utilized some of the OGC from the Modern System Reference Documents.

Based on v1.0, I wouldn't say they all integrate seamlessly, but they can work together, assuming you pick and choose which mechanics you like over any of the d20 Modern mechanics. For example, you either choose Spycraft classes or d20 Modern Hero classes.

I'd say it'd be a bit of a hurdle. They changed many things such as the skill set away from D&D and hence d20 modern.

Hmmm...That makes me want to drop the money on SC2 less. I have so much D20 Modern material that I would hate to have spend a lot of time fitting it into SC2 rather than just playing D20 Modern.

That settles it, I'm heading back to my FLGS to take a closer look as SC2.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. Core stuff, such as the class and skill system, are pretty different. You'd want to use one or the other. However, I think many Modern add-on supplements could be tacked on without too much trouble. You could use the demihuman races and magic out of Urban Arcana, for example, or use Blood and Fists to expand the SC 2.0 Martial Arts feats.

I ended up buying it. So far, I don't think it would take too much to combine the two. Bascially decide on which skill system to use. I'm going to try out the way classes are set up in SC2, and then add in what I want from D20 Modern. I'll have to add a couple base classes for psychics and magic users (I thought psionics was going to be part of the base book in SC2...). It's going to take a little work to make it the system that I want, but even if I went the other way around and brought over things from SC2 to D20 Modern, I think it would make a stronger game all around. The only thing I didn't really like it that SC2 is still very much an espionage game. I thought I read that it was going to be tailored a bit closer to a slighty more generic "modern-style" game. Nothing wrong with that, since SC has always done spies better than anything.

There isn't much point to using anything from the main d20M mechanics with Spycraft. The FX spells and psionic powers are worth pinching for the moment, although you'd have to work up your own FX basic classes unless you want FX to be the sole domain of expert classes, and even then you'd have to do a minimal amount of work to convert the advanced classes from d20M to expert classes for SC2.0 (mostly: add an initiative bonus and base wealth and gear ratings, and delete the reputation bonus). From Urban Arcana, incantations are definitely worth using and the non-human races can easily be converted into the Spycraft origins system. From the Menace Manual, the organizations are definitely worth importing although I think converting the creatures and NPC stats would be more trouble than its worth.

Now that I've got a cursory read-through (about halfway), I think what I'm going to do is replace the SC2 default character classes and such with D20 Moderns. There will be a little work in conversion, but most will be fairly straight forward (redo skill points and some skill selections being the major point). I like the way that characters are set up in D20 Modern a lot more than in SC2 with basic classes, advanced, and prestige. I will roll up a couple characters once I make my final decision to try it out. If nothing else, I'll replace D20 Modern rules in places with those from SC2.

If we ever see any 3rd party support for Spycraft 2.0, that's the one thing I'd really want, a conversion of the d20 Modern base classes to SC2.0. While it's something I probably could do, I don't know either system all that well.

I've filched some bits from Spycraft Lite for my Modern game, and I'm considering some more as well. However, I like Modern basic, advanced, and prestige classes too much to change to Spycraft completely.
