How would you like to see Grapple changed?

I'm not a big fan of the current grapple rules. I think they are to cumbersome. If you were designing the new grapple rules, what would you do to make them easier?

I like how Saga's system looks, but I haven't actually tried it yet.

Can you give an overview?

I think grapple works fine as is. . . but I am totally willing to try something different.

I don't trust my accuracy at the moment -- my SW Saga books is lent out -- but there were a couple of feats which gave Pin and Throw as Grapple options with fast resolution. No "break the grapple" flow chart, just "win this and your opponent is limited to one swift action next round".

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong! :)

I want to see a situation where a high strength, Large or huger creature does not automatically win. Gt a bonus, sure, but the auto win where the creature has about a +44 or so to the character's +15 is ridiculous.

Frankly everything dealing with fighting without weapons needs to be rethought and upgraded.

Well, there are rules for grabbing and grappling in Saga.

I believe if you make an opposed attack roll to grab, and you succeed, your opponent cannot take any actions, until they spend a standard action to break free (one grabber per CL).

Grappling comes in when you have the feats Crush, Pin, or Throw.

I see no reason why D&D should have kludgy wrestling simulation rules grafted onto its heavily abstracted combat system.

Just simplify it to opposed attack rolls or something.

Whatever form the rules take they just need to satisfy what someone is actually trying to *do* when they grapple in 3.5:

* Prevent spell-casting
* Prevent attack/soak up attack
* Immobilize
* ..any others?

I see no reason why these can't be slipped into the normal combat model, again, in whatever form it ends up taking.

Exactly.

I can see than an halfling couldn't really restrain a giant, but he should have a reasonable chance of escaping from a grapple.

Also, as many other posters have said elsewhere, give us decent rules for climbing on very large creatures.

Yeah, this is basically how it works. I kind of have a mixed opinion about them. I told all of my friends about them and they are pretty much horrified that all their options are taken away.

The saga system doesn't allow you to pin someone without a feat. You can't deal damage in a grapple without a feat. It's impossible to grapple someone then forcibly move them anywhere.

I don't mind so much. I'd like to have some basic options to choose from and make it so that if you want to do something cool in a grapple you need to be specialized in that sort of attacking (like using the feats in saga edition).

Pretty much there shouldn't be that many times when grappling should be the best option you have compared to hitting someone with your weapon or casting a spell, etc. Right now, there is almost no reason NOT to grapple any wizard you see, even if you are BAD at grappling. I'd like to see that changed.
