D&D General How you would have done the Dungeons and Dragons' movie - 80's edition

Well, that didnt take long. Yeah I dont think anybody wants a bored of the rings serious tone version of D&D with a plethora of other options at the ready. House of Dragon, Rings of Power, Wheel o Time, Blood and bone or whatever netflix deal was. etc..

And yet tgats what's successful.
. Big screen baldurs gate with Assassins via Bhaal.

The movie flopped. If they do another one sane tone I would expect it to flop as well. I suspect a Dragonlance adaption would also flop.

I’ve never seen the first few movies but legend has it that they were terrible on every level. Eventually something might stick I guess.
they were done because one guy through dumb luck ended up with the movie rights and needed to do something to hang on to them despite having no budget and no idea what he was doing, and the result is accordingly

This would probably still end up rated PG because they hadn't figured out PG-13 as a thing yet.

It was the 80s though. R basically meant don't show it to toddlers. PG was if the movie theatre was strict you could watch it with your 12 year old brother.

We all saw Aliens or whatever age 8 or what have you and that wasn't unusual.

And it was such a different time. We had pg-13 by the late 80's....but it did not matter much as they still considered most things "okay" for kids to see.

Though few parents or adults cared.

They used to show movies at night on a projector for free....for kids. And this time of year would start the horror movies. Nightmare on Elm street, Friday the 13th, Christine and like Texas Chainsaw Massacre....all for kids 2 and up.

While I think original Conan was much better, I didnt think Destroyer sucked. I actually, to this day, think its the best D&D like movie out there.
I think it is massive underappeciated as an authentic old school pulp Sword & Sorcery, more true to the source material than the first (admittedly better) movie.

One of the few films for which I own the novelization of, actually, which was directly responsible for setting off my favorite book series of all time:

What are you basing this success on? The Wall with Matt Damon? World of Warcraft with whoever was in that movie?

Wouldn't be very D&D, would it?

Well, thats the million dollar question. Nobody knows what D&D is like. Thats all in the design as it allows folks to make their own stories so its not got a strong identity. Thats a bit of a killer when you want a brand recognition in media.

Though, if they made a serious epic with R rating, it wouldnt sell. Be like the last Mortal Combat movie.
