How's your Warlock?

Hey yall

I just picked up Complete arcane and saw the warlock. I thought he should look cooler :p . And correct me if I am wrong, but I can't find a spells/day. Does he have unlimited spells per day. If so, he can outcannon the cannon (sorc). At a D6 HD, and unlimited uses of blasts a day. Granted, he has a shorter spell list known (like one per lvl) but that still makes one helluva blaster.

What do you think? I think he's a little on the power gamin side- all blast and no skillz

The Warlock does not get spells per day. The eldritch blast is a spell like ability that can be used with no limit. What you may be interpreting as his limited spell list are the invocations; also spell-like abilities that mimic spells or augment the eldritch blast.

They are actually a good deal weaker than a sorcerer when it comes to offensive magic, or magic in general, but having unlimited uses of their invocations is pretty cool. Only during the early levels they are really strong.

Ah, and if you like offensive spellcasters, you will like the Warmage, which is described a few pages further. ;)

The character is great for DM's who want an npc on the fly and players that want a spellcaster but will not keep track of spells known for the day, spell slots, or spell points. Just plug in and play! I think they should have put this class, instead of the sorceror, in D&D for Dummies.

And that is not to disparage the class. I am playing one now and love it. But I am that player-type described above. I don't think I will ever play a regular spellcaster again, when the Warlock is an option.

Warlocks are cool. I used one as a boss in a dungeon. Every level of the dungeon he'd attack the PCs for a couple rounds and when he took damage or the situation looked bad teleport (via Flee the Scene which really confused the PCs lol) away and then heal via underlings/wand of cure critical wounds. When the PCs finally fought him at the top of the tower they were very thin on resources and nearly lost. 1 was with out any spells (being a wizard that was really bad), one was unconcious and 1 had 10 HP left.

I haven't seen one as a PC yet but it would probably be alot of fun just to try out.

Warlocks are different. Just different and once that wears off there is not much left. I perfer classes with a bit of meat and not just flair.

I've been playing a Warlock in a campaign starting at 10th level for a couple months now.

If you measue power in damage output, he's nothing special. The Ranger/OotBI can dish out more damage on average, and for each time I Maximize SLA the Paladin can Smite Evil + Power Attack for even more pain. Eldritch Blast is good, but really not great.

That doesn't mean he doesn't have areas to shine in. Eldritch Blast is reliable; I've missed once all campaign and untyped magical damage is great against high DR critters like Warforged Titans. We don't have a Rogue, so our SOP is for me to use Baleful Utterance to shoot the lock off. With Detect Magic at will I'm always on the lookout for hostile enchantments. Flee the Scene has short range but still lets me carry others, and is great for moving the party around obstacles. With Beguiling Influance and a Circlet of Persuasion I'm a great face for the party. And last session I leveled up and took Scribe Scroll, which will let me prepare even more useful utility spells like Invisibility Purge and Cure Disease.

So if you want someone to rain down wrath and destruction upon your foes, get a Sorcerer or Warmage. But if you want a flexable character with a strong bag of tricks, Warlocks work pretty well.
