D&D (2024) Its Ironic That Fire Goliaths Make Better Celestial Warlocks Then Aasimar Do

Even if you are right the solution should be simple and easy: to create a racial substitution level.

For example replacing with other catrip or a feat. Or the catrip light would enjoy a free metamagic feat.
Racial Substitution Levels worked by replacing 3 of the 20 class levels back in 3e, well before WoTC came up with subclasses for 5e. For 5e, they probably would replace subclass levels because of their thematic feel.

Wouldn't it be easier to create racial subclasses for the classes? PF1 did this for a couple of their classes.

Racial subclasses isn't a wellcome idea for the philosophy of 5ed.

My suggestion is if you got a power from two different sources, specie and subclass, then you can choose one from the same list and level.

For example instead light again "sacred flame".

One day, I hope to actually play DnD.
There really ought to be a general rule about these kinds of redundancies. They come up all the time.
agreed, Wizards needs to make a list of all the commonly redundant abilities like resistances, alternate movespeeds and darkvision and give examples of how they are expected to resolve if stacked, resistances stack to immunities, movespeeds add 50% of the slower speed to the greater, darkvision can become greater darkvision having it's range increased or gain 10ft blindsight, those sorts of things.

I agree with 50% of the lower darkvision / blindsight / etc...

But I think damage immunity can lead to things being a bit broken. Get fire immunity and a fill a bag of holding with Lava for instance.

I would keep it at 50% * 50%

Its pretty rare, but there's a few cases of ''X damage is reduced by Y flat number on a hit'' in the game. Gaining double the resistance could grant that, like ''You gain resistance to Fire. If you already have resistance to Fire, instead any Fire damage dealt to you by that attack is reduced by an amount equal to your Proficiency Bonus''.

Maybe add DR to the resistance?

I'm with @Mistwell on this one.

If you are a player so hung up on mechanics that you are genuinely upset you don't get a second cantrip (of all things) because your combo gives you the same one twice... then why do you care about the narrative combination between your species and class?

Would it be cool if there was an "official rule" to let you have both? Sure. But if you truly want to roleplay the narrative of an Aasimar Celestial Warlock... you should want to do that regardless of how many game mechanics you get given.

Play the story cause you find it cool... not because of the mechanical bells and whistles you can wring out of it.
