I think it's brilliant and I don't care what you can't accept. Not a trick I can accept, really. To me the whole point of RPG rules is to model the setting. If they're not intended to do that, I don't want them.

If they refuse to use them in a consistent way that makes sense in the setting (whatever setting; different settings can have different explanations) then yeah, they're doing more harm than good IMO.I'm beginning to think we should just eliminate creature types.
Right back at you sir.I think it's brilliant and I don't care what you can't accept.
So Keith baker having humanoid gnolls in Eberron is a brillant idea, but when WotC does it, it is ridiculous? That is IMO simply ridiculous. A PC gith and an NPC gith are not different kinds of being.
Healthy take. And fully within lore. The more I see of these changes, the more likely I am to choose myself what something is. Goblins and Bullywugs as Fey, for example, doesn't fit my game world.
Is that explanation in the books? Are there statblocks for all the different types? So Keith baker having humanoid gnolls in Eberron is a brillant idea, but when WotC does it, it is ridiculous?
They had a perfect valid explanation. Not being born in the Astral Plane and instead living your whole life in the material plane changes you.
I buy that.
That idea was true for drows in older editions. Not being constantly in the underdark and instead on the surface lets your drow abilities and weaknesses fade.
That aspect of the Drow (which is still just a convenient rationalization since it was clearly done just there could be "balanced" Drow PCs) was at least laid out clearly in the lore. Can you show me where they do this for all the other species with this complication? So Keith baker having humanoid gnolls in Eberron is a brillant idea, but when WotC does it, it is ridiculous?

I forgot that anything that is not at least 30 years old is no lore. That aspect of the Drow (which is still just a convenient rationalization since it was clearly done just there could be "balanced" Drow PCs) was at least laid out clearly in the lore.
