D&D (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

I'm beginning to think we should just eliminate creature types.
If they refuse to use them in a consistent way that makes sense in the setting (whatever setting; different settings can have different explanations) then yeah, they're doing more harm than good IMO.

The thing is, WotC has been doing this with their PC races for a while. Compare the Volo bugbear to the MM monster. Where is the long limbed trait on the monster? Where is the brute trait on the PC stats? They don't match. Same with hobgoblins Save Face feature or Kobold's Grovel ability? What about PC minotaurs and centaurs being the wrong type AND size? All those were examples from the old race design paradigm.

Nothing has changed except that creature type is also more malleable.

That is IMO simply ridiculous. A PC gith and an NPC gith are not different kinds of being.
So Keith baker having humanoid gnolls in Eberron is a brillant idea, but when WotC does it, it is ridiculous?

They had a perfect valid explanation. Not being born in the Astral Plane and instead living your whole life in the material plane changes you.

I buy that.

That idea was true for drows in older editions. Not being constantly in the underdark and instead on the surface lets your drow abilities and weaknesses fade.

Is that explanation in the books? Are there statblocks for all the different types?

That aspect of the Drow (which is still just a convenient rationalization since it was clearly done just there could be "balanced" Drow PCs) was at least laid out clearly in the lore. Can you show me where they do this for all the other species with this complication?
