Humor in sourcebooks

Just read the excerpt for the Explorer's Handbook and noticed that it was laced with humor -- the intro, "How to Survive a ___", Windwright Captain's quote -- which smacks of Rich Burlew's style.

Humor was definitely in our minds when we were working on those Survival Guide sidebars. Rich and I were sitting in the cafe at the Union Square Virgin Megastore brainstorming ideas for them... it was high-energy and exciting. Or maybe that was just the caffeine...

So, yeah! As far as humor goes, when appropriate, I'm all for it. :D

Bring on the ha, has!!

Gotta love the 1EDMG for the humorous cartoons:
"Well, it either allows the user to cast the various Bigby's Hand spells or it's a +2 backscratcher. So far were not sure..."

Nelson: Ha ha!

I can't imagine reading a sourcebook, or any rulebook, that didn't have some humor in it. I'd rake my eyes out, I'd be so bored.

A little joke here and there - that's how it should be (if appropriate, of course - A Midnight supplement should not have one running gag after the other). Things like Entry 100 in the DMG "100 Character Traits" table, The Deja-Vu, all the humorous material components, funny mock quotes as introductions to PrC's.... In fact, that's how I like my RPG sessions as well. Mostly "normal", but with some funny parts in it, like a pun here and there (okay, I confess, I cannot shut up when I'm a player, I *have* to do puns and humorous - at least to me - responses).

Even the occasional fun supplement (Like the Portable Hole Full of Beer) are great fun. The only thing I don't like are RPG's where the whole concept is humorous. PP&P, Pokethulhu and the like. I could not play that. We made a D&D "Humour" campaign, and it just was not fun. It doesn't work if it's forced.

Me and Suzi try to lighten things up a bit by throwing in the ocassional wry/funny comment. My favorite so far has been the below.

"Ick! I'm a what?" — title for a section on template acquisition in Beast Builder.

I hope others find it as funny as I did while writing it. :)

25 years later, I still spend many an idle moment debating with myself about which cartoon in the AD&D DMG was the funniest. "Papers and Paychecks -- no, +2 backscratcher -- no, Papers and Paychecks --" etc. I haven't actually looked at that book in close to 20 years, but still...
