Humorous DR

It turns out that the blood war rages on forever, not because of the endless hordes of the abyss, or because of the great tactics of the baatezu, but because of a silly technicality.

Demons have dr #/good. Their attacks are treated as evil and chaotic-aligned for the purposes of overcoming dr.

Devils have dr #/good. Their attacks are treated as evil and lawful-aligned for the purposes of overcoming dr.

Yeah, we get a thread about this every couple of weeks. Evil outsiders have DR X/good, not X/evil, because they're made out of evil. This really is the right way around if you think about it.

If we were talking about elementals it'd be obvious. Fire elementals aren't hurt by fire, right? They're hurt by water. If a war breaks out between two nations on the Plane of Elemental Fire, the two sides will be unable to hurt each other directly with fire, and there's no water to be found in their home environment. So their best natural weapons will be useless, which means the war might tend to drag on.

Change "fire" to "Evil," and "water" to "Good," and you have a description of the Blood War. It's not just a silly technicality, it's completely reasonable.

It might also makes sense from the perspective: "Damage Reduction naturally evolved to protect against the "natural" or "typical" enemy of Demons and Devils.
(It doesn´t explain celestials that might have DR/evil, but "evolution" can explain why there natural weapons are treated as good aligned ...)

this is why almost any book detailing the blood war has special materials/spells/abilities that allow tanar'ri and baatezu to slaughter each other.

the main reason the bloodwar rages on forever however is thee folded:
1 there are infinite tanar'ri in the Abyss (infinite layers of finite size)
2 there are infinite Baatezu (finite layers of infinite size)
3 my PC's keep spilling it over into the prime, thus dedicating more souls to it
4 only finite fiends display intrested in the war, this preventing the utter genocide that can end this war.

Example snipped. Not only political, but also religious (e.g., the very first line). -Darkness

The bloodwar is humongus never ending, all know about it, all wis to end/win it, but it never ever stops, it keeps going anihilating entire prime material warlds, over a pretty silly point, what is the "greater" evil, lawfull or chaotic. *snip*

So those devils and demons cannot deal more than 5 points damage? I think they can. They can top 15 points, too, for that matter. So they don't pack quite the punch they should, but they can still hurt each other. And this isn't taking into consideration magic, or surestriking weapons.

The only real bugger about this is the regeneration, which needs good-aligned spells or weapons to be overcome.

I think he was pointing out the lawful/chaotic bits. Not the good/evil parts.
Wouldn't it make some sense (applying same logic as currently in place - i.e. fire beings are imune to fire) that a Chaotic Evil demon would have DR #/good or lawful, and a Lawful Evil devil would have DR #/good or chaotic?
Ignore the good/evl axis line for a moment here. And, ummm, yeah, that does seem like a silly over sight.

That's exactly my solution... unfortunately that leaves the yugoloths as pretty useless mercenaries.
