(Hybrid) seeker help

Lesker

First Post
Hello again.

We are starting new campaign in a few days and I'm thinking about playing seeker. The problem is it seems like he doesn't have many options (having only PHB3), so I'm considering making him a hybrid, probably ranger.

Is pure seeker viable? I'm afraid of lack of options...
Is seeker/ranger any good or is there something more interresting? I'm afraid that just spamming twinstrike will be my best/only option...
Any good multiclasses? I'm thinking about rogue for the thievery skill...
Any other thoughts/hits/tips?

As for rules, we can use PHB 1-3, and all "xxx Power" books excet MP2.
We already have a defender, a leader and a striker in our party, so I'd like to have some versatility (that's why I'm considering a hybrid).

Thanks

Of course a pure seeker is viable! Why would they make a book full of non-viable characters? I've seen the seeker in action, and it's got a quite unique play style, shooting arrows (or throwing stuff) and having it explode on contact.

If you still want to go hybrid, ranger's a pretty good choice. You can be either an archer or a heavy thrown weapon hitter. You'll want Wisdom and either Strength or Dexterity (depending on what build you want) to be equally high, since ranger and seeker have two different primary stats.

Another good possibility (purely mechanical; you'll have to come up with your own story reasons) would be avenger, since it uses Wisdom as a primary stat as well and has some melee options. You'd want Strength and either Dexterity or Intelligence as secondary stats. There are also some hybrid options suggested in the book.

Rogue is good if you make an archer. If you want thievery, take the Sneak of Shadows feat from the PH. First In from MP will also be useful.

Hope this helps!

I like Seekers. They are a somewhat unique class as a controller who attacks AC and whose powers generally have a lot of single-target focus. I'll give you the rundown of mine:

I envisioned a character wading in to battle, chucking sickles/knives/daggers/axes/hammers every which way and mucking up enemy actions. I wanted an -almost- melee controller, but not in a real defender style.

My first thought was human, then thought Genasi channeling the Elemental Chaos like a dervish in battle and with the throwing build's attack bonus, a 16 Wis/18 Str would work very nicely (and Genasi are cool). Alas, I play a lot of Genasi, so I decided to go a different route, the original, human route.

Still throwing, but the extra feat, defense bonus, third at-will and feat support is really nice. My AC was "down 1" so wading in to melee as a controller I really needed toughness (especially with the very real possibility of playing along side a relatively squishy fighter) but I also wanted a weapon feat. Alas, no sickle, so I went with Drow Long Knife for the +3 proficiency, heavy thrown weapon that can also be used in melee.

It worked surprisingly well. Sure, I wanted to stay near the defender but I can also absorb some hits for him, better utilizing party surge/healing resources. My at-wills also help defenders look like rock stars.

Then, I found my sickle. At level 2 I had access to a magic weapon of choice or to buy up to about a 3rd level weapon. Normally I HATE relying on a single enchantment but the weapon art fit what I was looking for so I retrained in to Talenta Sharesh (+3, d8) and got a Farbond Spellblade. Mechanically, I love it.

Sure, I could have cheesed in to a Fullblade for better damage, etc. but the Sharesh fits what I wanted, theme-wise, and has some nifty benefits. It's techically a heavy blade and a small polearm so I feated in to Hafted Defense at second level, gaining "back" that point of AC from not maxing strength with another race and staying closer to my original idea.

My favorite power is very situational, the first-level encounter power that lets me pseudo-dominate an enemy and potentially daze it and an adjacent enemy. When I can use it, with my increased accuracy, it rocks. Some encounters it never really comes up, but that's okay. With three at-wills I have had good enough variety even at low levels.

The archer version is also fun-on-a-bun. In this instance, elf works great as you're mobile as all get out. If they surround you, blast 'em away and move. Building durability isn't as big so you can just up your bow size (or better yet, Superior Crossbow for added accuracy) for a damage boost. You don't help utilize party surges generally very well, but it works on other levels.

I actually play a seeker/ranger and it's a blast. Arrows flying everywhere! It sucks that hunter's quarry and inevitable shot get compartmentalized. But there is good synergy with the "we grant ranged basic attacks" suite of ranger powers like guardian arrow, flying steel and thousand arrow awareness. My build is for a sniper, so the Twilight Adept and Shadow of the Wild feats are my best friends. We started at 8th level so I dont know what the build would be like earlier on
