I *almost* bought an Avalanche Press book

Alzrius, sorry, I have a hard time understanding a Japanese perspective. You come from a country that has young naked girls prancing around in a oil-slicked relay race, and young girls' panties for sale in vending machines.

While we're stereotyping, just becase I'm Americian means that I come from a country with naked girls prancing around in the streets flashing anyone who'll give the custome jewerly. And where used panties can be purchased over the the internet.

Those are extremes, and the ones you mention aren't even based on fact, mine are. So before you slam another culture for some percieved sense of immorality you should do two things.
1. Get your facts straight, it'll save you alot of headaches
2. Look around you before passing judgement on others, it'll save you from looking like a fool in public.

This is only for online gamers and those that happen to know about RPGNow.com so it's not overly acurate... but still, I think it's close.

thanks for the link, i voted.

interesting to see my ideas, at least for you and ENworld seem to be not to far outta line. I wish there was a poll that was at least a little bit more scientific though... :)

again, thanks for the info!

Well, you're not going to get flamed by me. But I do have a question. Are you a woman? If not, how can you be so sure what is and is not offensive to us?

Well, I'm pretty sure - mainly because of the look my wife had on her face, and the "Well, My God" she uttered, when she looked over my shoulder at the computer screen, while I was visiting Avalanche Press' web site a little earlier. :)

I hadn't really paid much attention to the cover of the book, which I have glanced through several times at MFLGS, and will be buying this weekend, along with their Celtic book (title escapes me right now). After reading this thread, I went back to MFLGS to look at the cover, and just shrugged a bit. Maybe it's because I am 39. Maybe it's because I am a male. Maybe I like the color green. Maybe the old addage, "Don't judge a book etc." applies here, for cover nothwithstanding, I think there is a lot of stuff a DM could use in a setting where the Fey, or however you name them, figure in some degree of prominence.
Sorry, but I personally have no difficulty with that cover, as compared to previous Avalanche covers.

And I think the book in and of itself is quite good.

See, you did your research. ;) That's a bit different than a sweeping pronouncement that something isn't offensive to women when A) you aren't one and B) a woman has already posted saying she's offended.

I'll have to back Buttercup and joe b on this one, since I am a wife, a mother, and D&D player, and do fantasy art.

Naked women or men for that matter, doesn't offend me as long as its done tastefully. I looked at all the covers, and can't quite get past the poses, and unrealistic nature. The art is very good, the skimpiness of dress on most of their covers I can overlook. Their poses and degree of unrealistic dress, however, just screams vulgarity to me. I know most D&D players catch heat enough from non-D&D players, and its hard enough to explain to others without product covers like this, it certainly doesn't help matters.
As a mother, my 9yr old sometimes plays with us, do you really think I would have that book at our table with him sitting there......umm.....No! I hope I can speak for other mothers out there where I'm glad I have a healthy young boy with intrests in women and such, but if he were to bring home a Pokemon, or Yu-gi-yo, that looked like that, I would be furious and wonder what kind of game he was playing.
I would never have learned D&D if my husband hadn't persistantly wanted me to play. I can say I probably would have never taken him or the game seriously if he would have used one of their products instead of WotC or MP.

In conclusion, I think they could have done much better than the suggestive pose, the rest could have been overlooked, although with a touch of more realism.

Alzrius, I'm not offended on the behalf of anyone. I'm not a congressman. I'm offended because it offended me. And if you're not Japanese, that's fine; my comments don't apply. But, coming from Japan, or Europe does affect one's views towards pornography and racy images, because they are far more prevalant in those countries than in the U.S. If my geographic location has swayed my opinion towards APs cover art, than so be it. It doesn't make me intolerant. If they want to watch naked women prance around on TV in Japan, more power to 'em.

But, that discussion is beyond the topic of this post. I was merely pointing out, that if you had been Japanese, that the culture that you would have grown up in would have had an affect on your viewpoint.

Yep I am in the crowd that doesn't purchase Avalance products because of the gratuity. Mongoose has come close to the line in some of their products as well.

I did by Avalanches Celtic book, becuase it didn't seem to have this quality. maybe supporting this aspect will show avalanche that it is not neccesary to put that studd on a cover, or even inside.

Razuur.
