I *almost* bought an Avalanche Press book

It seems at least at one level their marketing strategy worked. I wasn't even aware of the book until I saw this post. It is unlikely that I would have spotted this at my local hobby store considering all of the d20 stuff is stored book shelf style rather than covers facing outwards...

How can a picture offend you? At the magazine rack, more women's mags have naked or half naked women on the cover than men's mags. Ever heard the term "don't judge a book by its cover? Sounds like more pc bull crap to me.

America: The United States of the Offended. Someone is always offended by something. People* need to get over it.

* By people, I mean people in general, not anyone on the boards - see I had to have a disclaimer to avoid offending someone. Grrrr.

I'd bet that for every person who skips the book, because the cover offends them, there's a few who buy it, because of the cover.

AP's covers have never really bothered me at all. That said, I havent bought any of their product. The reason for this being that I have felt that given the subjects of their books, there is no way they'd be able to cover it in enough detail given the low page-counts of their products.

(Emphasis mine.) That's factually incorrect.

Well, to quote myself from earlier:

Originally posted by The one and only SD I believe you can judge most books by their cover- for it shows priorities of the publisher.

It is hardly a pc matter on my behalf. I have been called to many *-ist names for me to be taken seriously supporting anything pc. :D

That's the number 1 cop-out argument of our times. This phrase has been so continuously abused over time that it is now pretty much devoid of all meaning.

Let me restate my comment to the Troll Lords earlier, in more general terms.

Covers like AP's don't "offend" me per se. But they do make it highly unlikely I'll buy the book.

Why? Because I can't take the book seriously.

While you cannot judge the quality or content of a book by its cover, you can judge the attitude with which the publisher is approaching the book. The fact that Avalance feels it appropriate to put a woman in a loincloth crouching cross-legged on a book about Norse roleplaying says to me that they don't take their stuff seriously. And even if they do, nobody in my group could possibly look at that book during a game without rolling their eyes or laughing at it.

I'm with Darkness on this: does die_kluge realize that the porn market is in the billions here in the United States? Porn-wise:

Japan: still uses mosiacs, mainly a renting market (their VHS tapes are primarily priced for rental like the VHS movie rentals we have here in the US)
United States: everything goes, mainly a purchasing (VHS) market

who's more decadent? As for weird fetishes, if you look closely, you'll find the same kind of things here in the US. (and by the way, I am not putting down the US. This is just for comparison sake)

Naked women on TV: um...switch on Cinemax or Showtime late at night? Playboy Channel. Hot Channel. Spice Channel. Pleasure Channel. etc.

die kluge: you really need to quit while you're ahead. You can't hold United States above other countries (morally) in regards to porn because we're at the top of the heap!

Edit: added (morally) in last paragraph for clarification

Default Name Player - show me in my comments where I'm trying to elevate the U.S. morally above other countries because of the prevalance or lack-thereof of pornography. Show me.

And for the record, the argument that the U.S. spends billions on porn is specious, we also spend billions on books, and by your argument, we should be the smartest people in the world. We're bigger than most other countries, and also the richest. So, of course we spend more money on just about everything else. That doesn't make it better, or worse - it just means we're bigger.

The U.S doesn't have any primetime nudity on any TV station. HBO, Cinemax, are all subscriber-based channels, and all of the other ones you mentioned, Spice, etc, are adult-oriented subscriber based chanels as well. They are not free, and are not public. I've never seen them firsthand, but have seen references, and seen clips of (on HBO, among other places) of shows that air - in primetime, featuring nudity, and other sexually explicit scenes and images in European countries and Japan.
And frankly, that's great. More power to them. All my point is, is that because those countries have a more relaxed attitude towards that kind of thing, could, in my belief, have an affect on said person's attitude towards provocative and risque images on the cover of a d20 magazine.

And if you guys really want to debate me on this topic, feel free. But get your own facts right, and for god's sake, take a logic class.
