I *almost* bought an Avalanche Press book

Would you rather have a good book with a lousy cover or a great-looking paperweight that you would never put anywhere near your gaming table?

Synicism, your insight about AP is appreciated, and your comments are helpful.

To answer your last question, as a consumer, it isn't out of line of me to expect both.

Of course not, but the gaming industry is not exactly a huge moneymaker. I suspect that a lot of publishers simply deal with the art they can get. So much the better if it draws attention to their products.

I believe that Chessex put out a product called Dragon Skin that you can use to cover up your game books to protect the covers or, in this case, to shield them from impressionable eyes.

If a book has something good in it, then I'll pick it up if I think I can use it. If the cover is really, really bad, I'll stick it in a book cover or a binder. Or I'll photocopy the pages that I want from the book and put it in my "3rd party crunchy bits" binder with stuff from the other books I've purchased just for part of the content.

Come on, folks. It's a book cover. It's a piece of paper. Chill out and play!

Alas I believe Chessex no longer makes Dragonskins, which is too bad, I have bought and used a bunch of them.

As for 'chilling and playing' I have a limited amount of time/money for gaming, a book has to jump out at me to excite my interest. The way to do that is have covers that are on topic, most Avalache covers have little to do with the subject matter.

Or to put it another way, I refuse to take a book, no matter how well researched, with a Viking babe in a leather swimsuit kneeling in snow seriously. Given that our FLGS shrinkwraps its merchandise the cover is the only way to judge the books. Too thin + dumb cover = no sale.

I've stated my opinion on this type of cover art before (here and elsewhere) so I will not cover that ground again in this thread.

There has been debate about d20 market glut, and frankly when I do manage to get to my FLGS, there is a lot to choose from while striving to stay within my budget.

Since I find cheescake cover art distasteful, it is a criteria: for putting the product in question in this customer's equivalent of 'the slush pile'.

Apparently Avalanche is not the only d20 publisher to use the "sex appeal" marketing.

Has anyone seen the cover for Cloud Warriors?
