Hmm ... haven't ability scores been in D&D since 1974 as one of the defining aspects of character generation? I don't see that going anywhere.

I'm happy that WotC is making (and crowdsourcing) 5E, but the more I read about the different opinions--nay, different universes--other players are invested in, the more I wonder if this is an achievable project. :erm:

I don't see the abilities going anywhere, either. I agree that the ability score doesn't seem as important as the modifiers...but who am I to say what is important, right?
